Pcos has anyone tried spironolactone?

Hi I have PCOS my periods are regular however I have severe hirsutism (excess hair) and acne and hair loss. They always told me to use the pill but I don’t want to because of the risk of blood clots as my grandma had it years ago because of the pill. From my research I have seen that spironolactone is good for hirsutism and acne, has anyone had it? How is it does it work and side effects?

Hi Aliye,

I'm in a similar position. I've got my period back regularly, and been resisting going on the pill for years, despite hirsutism and hair thinning. I've been treating it with electrolysis and minoxidil and do my best to keep weight down and diet on point.

I've really been thinking about spironolactone and have been prescribed it but I think you need to take it with an OC anyway as it can mess up your periods otherwise. Also, hearing reviews on issues around potassium levels, constant needing to wee and impact on blood pressure worries me.

Did you give it a go? I'm really considering it as have heard so many success stories but just a bit nervous!!
