Polycystic Ovary on Ultrasound

Hi everyone,

First post in this forum and really hope you can help.

Over the past 8 months I have had very irregular periods (cycle length anything from 23 days to 50+) with bleeding in between periods. Recently I have started bleeding after sex too. GP did all the usual swabs and smears and referred me for a pelvic ultrasound. Had the ultrasound today, and they said that my left ovary 'looked a bit polycystic' and to wait a week then make an appointment with the GP, who would probably want to do some more blood tests. Other than the things I've mentioned, I don't have any other typical PCOS symptoms (am a healthy weight, no unusual hair growth etc.)

Will of course make an appointment to see my GP and talk to her about it all - she is really supportive. I just wondered if you guys could help me with a couple of things:

- What should I expect now in terms of further tests and/or treatment? Is there anything I should ask for specifically?

- If it's not an odd question is PCOS the only explanation for the ultrasound or could there be other things going on?

- If it is PCOS what's the likely impact on me and in particular fertility and mood?

Just to complicate matters, I also have severe depression and started trying to conceive a month ago. Am trying to stay calm and not worry too much, but it's not easy especially as it will be a few weeks until I get to see my GP.

Hey hun, not all women display symptoms and can be polycystic. Many women have babies and have display no symptoms at all. You need to rule out endometriosis too. I have the same irregular bleeding and random spotting that can last up to 6 weeks. It's really frustrating. I display the other PCOS symptoms too. Don't be depressed as this isn't going to help you conceive. Try not to think about it and it will happen. Keep on going back to the doctors to get a diagnosis as they messed me around for 8 years until they did an internal ultrasound and found cysts on both ovaries. You're a healthy weight which is a good thing. Maybe take some supplements, they say you should take folic acid up to 6 months before trying to conceive.

Hope this helps. xXx

Thanks so much for your reply. I have been taking prenatal supplements for about two months including folic acid. I will definitely ask about endometriosis as well.

The depression unfortunately isn't related to all of this directly... It's a long term thing since my early teens. I am doing my best to stay as well and positive as I can, but it's not easy.

I know this is not what any woman wants to hear but try cutting out processed sugars and carbs for a while. I did it after getting spotting every month (only giving me a week break) and it has seem to have worked so far. It hasn’t been a long while so I can’t preach but it is worth a shot. Trust me, cutting out crisps and chocolate killed me! Worth it if it helps your body though. You are right not to stress as that will just make matters worse. To know I am not the only one gives me some peace of mind! x
