I'm new - First OBS/GYN appointment...

Hi guys just after a bit of advice.

I was tested for PCOS 3 years ago and was told that my test results were normal. I moved recently and have therefore changed doctors. I had a doctors appointment yesterday as after 2 years of trying to conceive I am unfortunately not falling pregnant. My new doctor looked through my past medical records and told me that I DO in fact have PCOS which was a complete shock after being previously told that I was fine.

I have family members with PCOS who have a number of children so I am trying to not let the thought of not being able to conceive naturally get to me too much. Although I am so angry that I could have been having treatment for my symptoms and potentially any fertility issues a long time ago.

My doctor said that he is going to do an obs/gyn referral for me. I was just wondering what to expect as I am very anxious and probably stressing myself out unnecessarily.

TIA x

OOOOH bet you are livid.

They will probably do bloods again and a scan just to see what is going on now (I personally think they should skip this as you have family members with the condition and were diagnosed previously even though you were not told). Ideally you should have your tubes checked, cysts zapped as this can increase your chances of conceiving and then if that doesnt work then clomid. Clomid has very good success rates but there is a time limit on how long you can take it for which is why you need your tubes checked first in case they are blocked.

What is your BMI like currently ? I would start taking your temperature to see if you are ovulating as you can take this information with you for your fertility appointment as it will help them hugely, periods do not mean you ovulate sadly (which was me) and you can ovulate without a period too so it is lovely and straight forward so having a chart will help massively. The ovulation predictor kits tend to be quite unreliable for pcos ladies.

I would put your partner on the Boots Vit C and zinc tablets and get him to eat anything with zinc in it like pumpkin seeds etc as a 1/3 of fertility issues are now men so this will give them a boost just in case - They will obviously do a sperm test as well as you may not be the whole issue (which was me as my hubbie had lots of dead and two tailed sperm, but his sperm improved by over 100% in a year by taking those tablets)

If you do need extra help so be it, its not the end of the world really and is a means to an end. I conceived Noah after 3 years of TTC, which was hell I might add, via IUI and he is now 12 and well worth the hellish time (its why I only have one as I couldnt do it all again).

One thing to keep in mind though is our egg quality remains better for longer so that is the one advantage of pcos is we can conceive later than non pcos ladies (I was 36), you havent mentioned your age but I am sure you can put the ticking clock away.

You will get there in the end as it is extremely rare not to conceive just due to pcos and there is loads of help available too

Thank you for replying.

I will take all of your suggestions on board I just hope it doesn't take too long for the appointment to come through I am very impatient and just want to know where I stand and get a plan of action in place.

Am I likely to have any procedures done at my first appointment or will that just be more like a chat ??

no will be a chat I would of thought - you will learn patience :-) I was referred after 6 months so it took 2.5 years after that to conceive Noah but my hubbie did have dodgy sperm which didnt help!! I have the patience of a saint now with Noah !!
