A morning's work

β€’9 Replies

Hi all, I am transitioning from vegetarian to Vegan and am nearly there now. I have made: a lovely pot of homemade stew (made up, this is not a specific recipe) which has lentils, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, onions, nutritional yeast, coconut milk, curry powder and lentils in it; Vegan cheese for the first time, it tastes delicious; almond butter and black bean burgers. I am also trying out the nut milks before making my own and have to say I do like the cashew milk, I made my coffee drinks with it today.

Well done πŸ‘ sometimes I add a date to home made nut milk which gives it a little sweetness if you want it and dates are very nutritious. When I first started making cashew milk it was quite expensive due to adding far too many nuts but you only really need a small handful for one person. In one pint of bought nut milk there are only approximately 10 nuts! Your stew sounds so tasty and healthy.

Thank you so much for that very useful tip re homemade nut milk, I absolutely love dates and can't get enough of them. Looks like cashew nut milk is the one for me - I have a carton of hemp milk in the cupboard to try first though but I certainly enjoyed my coffee with the cashew milk today. The stew is lovely - I just tasted it before I decanted it into containers for the freezer - I had the black bean burger tonight which was absolutely delicious.

I am loving Vegan food. :)

Wowee!!!! Absolutely brilliant. Lots of animals will be so grateful. Less suffering. I had the misfortune recently to see what went on at an organic dairy farm . I could not sleep for a week afterwards. A vet artificially inseminated the cows -painful and cruel. They then removed a calf from his mum. The cow was crying for all the 5 days I was there. Usually they cry for at least 2 weeks. And of course what happens to the calf. So thank you for being conscious and caring.

Oh dear, that’s awful. I think being vegan is the best thing you can do for the animals and then as a consequence it’s the best thing for your own health. Animals are so trusting and most humans just abuse that trust. I naively thought organic was different but then realised it wasn’t. I decided you can not be responsible for what other do but you can be responsible for yourself and then I became vegan. πŸ’•

I agree with you and being a Vegan is definitely the best thing and I, like you, thought organic was different but I can see that it isn't any different whatsoever.

Oh my goodness, what an awful experience for you and an organic farm, this is where most people think things are much better and I was one of those. I honestly think there ought to be more on the news about these farms and the way in which animals are treated. Vegan food is really lovely and my tummy feels much better for it as well. :)

Thanks for your message crazyfitness. Cows have to be kept pregnant so that people take their milk....organic or not. All their calves are taken ....and mostly sold as organic meat ...after #6 years the cows are sent to slaughter. For me, it is unbelievable that in this 21st C people people can close their eyes to what actually happens to animals ...just so that they can eat them. I find it heartbreaking.

So pleased to see some vegans on this site.

You are welcome and I really don't know how you coped with that. It really is awful and if I'd known that I would have become Vegan a very long time ago, you think you are being good being a Vegetarian but I can see now that you are now.

The more Vegans the better. :)
