New vegan and low fodmap diet
Hi Janieb53, I can't really comment on the fodmap diet as I have not followed this however, I am a gluten free vegan. I won't lie I sometimes have foods I am not supposed to like gluten and sugar and I see a kinesologist who advises me to stay away from things like broccoli, chickpeas and red kidney beans so for the most I do but sometimes I have them. What are your reasons for following the fodmap diet? Maybe this will help give me some insight. I am studying vegetarian and vegan nutritional therapy to help myself and others. Thanks Louise x
Hi Hidden , I too should be following a Low FODMAP diet and just haven't quite been able to bring myself to it! Are you following one or the other already? I think as both can involve quite big dietary changes, it might be best to start off just focusing on one, as you do want to make sure you're eating enough.
I also understand the Low FODMAP usually involves eliminating certain foods for a month or so and then slowly reintroducing them to see what effects you badly. So it might not be necessary to be totally Low FODMAP. Hope that helps and good luck!
I did a variant of the monash fodmap diet for a few months when I was vegetarian to help with my IBS. It worked, but I did find the some of the restrictions onerous, and I then tried a low fat vegan diet and found I could reintroduce the high-fodmap foods anyway.
I had the advantage of working with a dietitian during my fodmap phase which is something I'd definitely recommend.
