Hi does anyone know if Vasculitis is linked ... - Vasculitis UK
Hi does anyone know if Vasculitis is linked at all to thyroid problems, or if any medications can affect the thyroid function.
I've not heard or read that vasculitis is linked to thyroid problems. Thyroid problems are auto-immune problems and I know that many patients with vasculitis (and other auto-immune diseases) also have thyroid problems. I was diagnosed with thyroid problems about 15 years before the WG was diagnosed.
I take Levothyroxine and nothing has changed significantly with my thyroid problem or medication since being diagnosed and treated for the WG 8 years ago.
My case history is the same as PatriciaAnn's.
I have not had treatment for WG long enough to say absolutely but no change so far.
I don't believe the two are linked ..... only in as much as both are manifestations of a 'faulty' immune system. I suffered from an over-active thyroid 10 years ago (I've had WG for 21). It didn't coincide with any sort of blip. None of my medics were concerned .... I just took Carbimazole for 6 months and it fixed it. Having said that, my Mother suffered Thyroid problems too. Hers was overactive and was subsequently totally destroyed by 'pioneering' radiotherapy in the 60's so there may be a genetic link. Also, my wife was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 6 years ago. Her levothyroxine dose has never changed and she has had no further problems. She was told that under active thyroid is more common in women. Also, there is a minor positive to this ..... if you have under-active thyroid you get all of your prescriptions free. Apply to your local NHS trust and you'll get a card!!
I started to suffer from vasculitis a few years ago on my shins and ,though not really painful, was quite marked at times. i have UAT and not currently under treatment for it. It only occurs on longer walks in the summer months and is also known as Golfers Vasculitis or Walkers rash. The Drs. don't seem to be much aware of it either-as with under performing thyroids/adrenals, which may well be connected.
My energy is better lately and a ten miler last Sat didn't cause the rash so that is anecdotal but quite telling.
I would post a pic but can't see where to do this..
