Vitamin D and GPA

Following a mail in blood sample my vitamin D level was reported as 53.2 nmol/L. (The normal range is 75-220 nmol/L.) and I've been sent supplements. My question is, has anyone else out the been asked to join the study and are there any contraindications?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. I've been told that a result of 50 is considered normal in UK (where I also live). However, I'm aware like you that all documented reports state the normal range to be 75 - 200. Think its because the NHS wants to save money in this cool and rain-ridden climate of ours, where the majority of people probably struggle to achieve a result of 50 due to lack of adequate sunshine.Good luck and best wishes

HiI’ve had GPA for about four years.

After about a year on prednisone I was sent for a precautionary bone density scan. The result was borderline and I was put on a vitamin D supplement at the 20000 dose for about a year. I now get them over the counter at the 800 - 1000 dose. I do this because being on mycophenolate I am very cautious about uv exposure.

I’ve never been asked to take part in any study. As far as I know the Vitamin D has not caused any problems.

Hi, I'm not on any trial but I was on Adcal D3 because I've been on prednisolone for 13years. I have GPA. It was stopped in February by the team I see for GPA. I was told my Vit D levels were ok so to stop it.At the time I didn't question it but I grew concerned so I asked them during a telephone consultation the reason behind stopping. The consultant I spoke to thought it was probably due to a recent diagnosis of Microvascular Angina.

I decided to ask my GP surgery for a Vit D blood test during an annual check up and my Vit D level was 28. I was told 30 was deficient.

My GP is getting in contact with my consultant to see if they are happy for him to prescribe a loading dose. So awaiting the outcome.

Anyone else told this?

Hi Ludo,

I have microvascular angina as well secondary to Vasculitis. For the past 3 years I have taken over the counter high dose Vit D as I tend to be deficient ( it’s very common in Behcets Syndrome which is the Vasculitis Variant I have ). I suspect it was the calcium they were concerned about not the Vit D.

Hi Brussels, I was thinking the same re calcium. I'm still waiting to hear back from my GP, I guess he's still waiting to hear back from my consultant and so it goes on 🙂.

Alls well that's all the matters in this current situation with Covid.

Merry Christmas and thanks for replying.

I have GPA and am also on Adcal-D3, which includes vitamin D. (I'm also on alendronic acid but probably don't need to be as pred is now at 5mg. )
