The definition of a superficial wound is "A scrape, bruise, discoloration, or swelling, of minimal severity." and "on or near the surface".
It means it is just the top of the skin that is involved and not down into the lower layers of the skin or even into the muscles underneath.
It's a bit like when they describe burns as first, second and third degree burns - first degree burns affect just the top layer of skin, similar to sunburn when the skin is red, second degree are down to the underneath layers and there is blistering and third degree goes right through the skin.
