I had an operation to remove my gallbladder when I was on a high dose of mycolophenate and a lot of other medication and it didn't make any difference, everything went smoothly.

Dear kujude,

The short answer is yes, yes and yes again- specifically my parathyroids, my fistula and a kidney transplant. Let me be a bit more helpful here, I was on dialysis, for four years, as a result of vasculitis. This was controlled by a 'cocktail' of drugs including 150my azathioprine. This affected, amongst other 'things', my kidneys- hence the dialysis. Generally speaking renal (kidney) patients tend to need there parathyroid glands removing- due to growths/cysts/nodules growing on them. Also, when it becomes obvious that, the need for, dialysis is approaching a 'fistula' is made. A fistula is where a vein is partially joined to an artery- so that the vein 'toughens up', in order to be able to take the pressures needed by dialysis. Don't worry too much if this doesn't make sense- it's complex and I'm NOT the best at explaining things.

I hope that this does, at least, re-assure you.

Very best wishes AndrewT

Yes. I had orthopaedic surgery last year and was taking Azathioprine. I made a successful recovery without any issues. It might be helpful to know why you are concerned about taking it whilst having surgery?
