Hi there. My uncle is in need of a kidney transplant. He's getting more ill every day. How long can he go without the transplant. He's currently on the wait list, I'm scared I'm gonna lose my uncle before he has his transplant.

Hi

I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. I'm guessing he's on haemo dialysis and not coping well. Have you and your family members considered being a live donor either as a striaght donor or paired exchange.

Has he been doing dialysis long and does he have any other health concerns which is worrying you? As generally you can last a long time on dialysis, some people having been surviving for 15 years or more on It, but a lot depends on healthy and restricted renal diet.

Hi there, sorry to hear your uncle is so unwell, however has he or family spoke with the renal specialist with regards to where he is exactly with dialysis. It's good he's on the transplant list as some people don't get on it due to complications with other health problems and on the transplant list is at least a positive for him and I'm sure your uncle or family have been told it can take up to four years on same or a lot quicker if a match becomes available ( worth looking into) Have any of his family thought about going forward to see if their compatible to him as it can quicken things up for him if family are a match. My husband went forward for me, however we weren't compatible and following that we were asked by renal specialist about going onto the UK Live Kidney pool which we both agreed too and four months on they got me a match, however donor still donates their kidney to someone else. it was the best way forward for me and I'm now two years post op and I'm doing good. I don't deny it could take a yearly so for tests to be run on donor, this ensuring the donor is healthy enough to go through major surgery. Your uncle would remain on the transplant list until a kidney becomes available...Def worth thinking about it...Hope this helps.

Wish your uncle all the very best and I do hope he gets a transplant soon..
