Opportunities to help with research

Good morning all!

We've had a lot of requests from researchers for volunteers to help with their studies. We've been sharing them on social media, but I thought I'd do a round up here.

For most of them, there's simply an online questionnaire, but for some, it's more in-depth interviews and discussions.

For all, you have to be over 18 (ethical consents are very tricky to get for younger people) and I've noted any other restrictions.

1. Investigating the long-term effects of an internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MCBT) intervention for tinnitus.

Eligibility: persistent tinnitus (over three months); not currently undertaking any other treatments

Task: You will be asked to use MindEar, a tinnitus-bespoke app, for a period of 12 weeks. You will also be asked to complete a short survey, which will take approximately 15-20 minutes of your time, at the beginning, after 4 weeks and at the end of the process.

To register your interest: Fill in a registration form app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.u...

2. Understanding the experiences of suicide-related care in NHS audiology services for all adults with tinnitus

Eligibility: You experience tinnitus, whether or not you have had suicidal thoughts or behaviours

Task: You will be asked to take part in an anonymous online survey. The survey takes 15-20 minutes to complete and asks about tinnitus care with specific reference to suicide prevention.

There is also an opportunity to take part in a 60-minute interview about your experience of tinnitus and suicidal thought and/or behaviours. You will be asked how you feel, think and cope, and about your experiences in the UK NHS tinnitus/audiology services.

To take part: Use the link to complete the survey: app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.u...

3. Investigating experiences of psychological interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy when delivered by a psychologist or an audiologist.

Eligibility: You must have received psychological treatment, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to treat your tinnitus from a psychologist or an audiologist

Task: You will be invited to share your experience in an online interview lasting approximately 25-30 minutes.

To register your interest: Fill in a registration form forms.office.com/r/L2MkwiteJU

4. Evaluation of an online mindfulness approach to manage tinnitus distress

Eligibility: Persistent tinnitus (over three months); not currently undertaking any other treatments

To register your interest: Fill in a registration form app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.u...

5. An exploration of the lived experience of individuals with tinnitus and depressive thoughts

Eligibility: You have experienced negative or depressive thoughts after the onset of your tinnitus

Task: You will be invited to share your experience on what it is like to live with tinnitus and how the onset of tinnitus has contributed to the development of negative or depressive thoughts at the time in a one-hour interview.

To register your interest: Contact the researcher Nadia Donald on 180198748@aston.ac.uk. Confidentiality will be ensured, and all data will be anonymised.

Great to see so many projects focusing on mental wellbeing. There's certainly more recognition too of the severe distress, leading to suicidal ideation, and that I'm sure is in no small part to communities like this, where people can be open and honest about how they are feeling. Researchers and medical professionals are paying attention, and want things to change!

Thanks in advance for your help

Nic

Hello Nic. Thanks for this. Out of interest, have any pharmaceutical researchers come your way? A simple Yes or No will do me. Hope shines eternal!

They haven't - they don't tend to, as they are generally needing clinical support when meds are involved.

clinicaltrials.gov is a good place to bookmark and check for these sorts of trials.
