elavil or amitriptyline for tinnitus - does it help or make things worse
Elavil, according to the Googles, is a brand name for Amitriptyline so they would seem to be the same thing - tricyclic antidepressant medications.
They can be helpful in treating mental health conditions, which may in turn help people struggling with tinnitus to be less distressed by it. It wouldn't be seen as a direct intervention for tinnitus.
So far as I can tell, just about every medication makes someone's T worse or sometimes better. I am not doubting any such report - T is so very subjective. For what it is worth, I found amitriptylene a benign drug. It helped greatly with post-herpetic neuralgia when I had shingles years ago, relieving pain and making me sleep long and well. My doctor willingly prescribed it at my request when my T intensified some years ago, solely to help me sleep but this time it did not help and I chose to discontinue. It never made my T worse or had any other ill effect in my case.
ENT Consultants do prescribe it for Tinnitus, it doesn’t make it go away but will give you a good nights sleep. I take one occasionally if I haven’t slept well for a while.
I take Amitriptyline for Neuropathy and it has never affected my tinnitus
