Hello everyone, The 2nd January I got severe tinnitus from taking 2x 25mg amitriptyline pills. The ringing sensation is my both ears are full of high pitch white noise (very diferent from the tinnitus i used to have for 3 seconds a few times a year).
I am housebound since it started and cant deal with much since it is causing a big insomnia and stress all day long.
I did find this forum and would like to know if there is anything I can do to helpmyself.
I had a perfect life and it all changed after taking 2 pills. With time I lost every hoppe it will vanish or at least lower in volume and it is causing a great deal of stress on my gf and parents.
Thanks for any words you may find to help me.

I might add that Ginkgo is not 3 tablets a day 7 / 52. That's Western medicine, and it would be well known therapy resulting. I have success on a least 3 days a fortnight taking it the way I do. For me those days are to be looked forward to.
you are probably familiar with the website of Tinnitus UK? Lots of information there about different ways you can help yourself. It does take time, though. Please don’t believe any adverts you see for “cures” unless endorsed on this forum or by the charity I named.
What helps one person doesn’t necessarily help another.
You say you had a perfect life but were prescribed amitrip for some reason - and this is a drug that’s sometimes used to help with the stress that tinnitus can cause some people.
The easiest thing to start with is breathing exercises. Here’s what the NHS has:
“If you're lying down, place your arms a little bit away from your sides, with the palms up. Let your legs be straight, or bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor.
If you're sitting, place your arms on the chair arms.
If you're sitting or standing, place both feet flat on the ground. Whatever position you're in, place your feet roughly hip-width apart.
Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable, without forcing it.
Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Breathe in gently and regularly. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5. You may not be able to reach 5 at first.
Then let it flow out gently, counting from 1 to 5 again, if you find this helpful.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. yes my life was perfect, I was prescribed amitryptyline to help a few headaches I was having. After taking it and developing T I asked around other doctors and I should have never have amitriptyline prescribed to me. I didnt know what it was and blindly trusted the doctor who said it would help. Little did I knew. Also the start those of 25mg for what I was told is higher than needed, but well what can I do know...
I do try to stay calm however the non improvment I had over this last 3 months lead me to think this is mostly a perm. issue.
Thanks for sharing the exercises with me, Ill use them when I need the most (sometimes anxiety takes over). Sorry for the english also as it isnt my main language.
I would also suggest joining one of the support groups run by Tinnitus UK. These are in person or online and gives you the chance to discuss management techniques among ithers who are going through, or who have gone through what you are experiencing now.
As happyrosie says dont chase cures, especially those you will read about in online forums. There is a lot you can do to help manage the tinnitus and regain your life.
In my opinion and from experience I would focus on calming your anxiety and achieving sleep through relaxation and breathing. The more you look after yourself and reduce your current stress levels the hogher chance of the tinnitus perception lowering. There are other paths such as CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) and sound therapy that may likely help and would be worth looking into but these will likely cost money.
The key here though, to reiterate, is do as much as you can to stay calm, keep in control and help your body relax as much as possible. T is very much linked and amplified by the stresses on your body. It may not be the cause, but it for sure is paired with anxiety levels.
I totally agree with Darren6. Support groups are great. I've been attending support group both in person and on line for several years and have learned so much through them. After attempting the NHS for treatment, I eventually went down the private route and have never looked back. Yes, I still have tinnitus, but not nearly as bad or as bothersome as it was. But, definitely joint a Tinnitus UK support group. All the best.
So sorry to hear this. It can be tough for sure. There is a good community here and lots of information. Don’t be on your own with it. Maybe seek help via your local Audiology unit of a hospital or a second GP to send you to a specialist. My T was sudden and it’s hard. Silence is tricky so I now have hearing aides that have masking and Bluetooth as well as a sound pillow for the nighttime. The key is distraction and reducing tiredness and stress which is far easier to type.
Be kind to yourself and seek as much help as you can so you are not alone with this.
Ask many questions but be careful of scams just wanting your money.
That should be a link to the Oasis sound machine I have. They have different cartridges in the base and the one I use is rain. I can send an image of that when I’m home today if you like. The pillow that connects shows as being out of stock on the same website.
If your tinnitus never stops and last more than six months then is very likely permanent damage some medications are Ototoxic. There is no medication or treatment those are all fantasies. In the beginning is horrible but after a year your body and brain will get use to it and will become a new normal for you, you know is there but you don't even notice it. For slepping well i recommend you buy an air purifier like Dyson Hot/Cold/Fan that will make white noise that will help you sleep better. You need to find a mask for your tinnitus and your frequency, mine is 10000Hz to 12000hz use it only to sleep better or this stuff will accentuate the volume of your tinnitus.
This masks bellow are my favorites i don't need them anymore i still have tinnitus but i ignore it:
- This are the only exercises that worked for me all the others are fairy tales, it works for most people not all. Combine this two exercises into one.
