Sleep help with Tinnitus

Hi All,

I’ve had a spike in my T since I was involved in a car accident a couple of months ago. I am deaf also so I wear hearing aids in both ears. I cope pretty well during the day and the hearing aids definitely help but at night it’s another story.

As soon as I take my hearing aids out the noise is unbearable and I am really struggling to settle to sleep. If I wake in the night, it’s a nightmare to try and get back to sleep.

I don’t know what to do. I have an app I use during the day with my hearing aids but I can’t hear it without the aids and I don’t want to disturb my husband.

Can anyone advise me on products that might help? I don’t want to spend lots of money on something that I can’t hear.

Thanks in advance.

Hi am sorry to hear about your accident, i use bone conduction headphones at night, i do have some hearing loss, they are called Shokz - my husband cant hear them when i have them on, they sit above the ears, he actually got a pair for his own personal use, am not totally sure if they could help but when i just looked them up there is a possibility so worth exploring?? they are not mega money, do hope things improve for you, i am newish to T and its ghastly.

Hi,Amazon do a product, it's got a clock, alarm, snooze mode etc, and has a speaker and also a 3.5mm jack. I use it and doesn't disturb my wife when I have it on (or she hasn't complained!!). It's sound oasis tinnitus machine. It has different pitches/sound types to mask. I'll be honest it doesn't quite match the pitch I hear, but it may be worth a try, although not cheap.

Hi   Crazylady6 It's a problem if you're deaf or partially so. I learnt early on in my T journey there was limited value in sound at night. I could hear it in my good ear but not my deaf ear - where T is most troublesome. If it's any consolation I can now sleep with very loud T unaided. If I wake in the night it's no longer the first thing to register . It took time but it's possible.

Thank you, for the reassurance. I wish there was a programme that I could use to get to habituation quicker. I know it’s just takes time but it’s affected work to the extent that I am off as a result. My boss isn’t sympathetic so I feel like I am in a viscous cycle of anxiety, T and lack of sleep.

I understand CL. Only too well. Habituation is a slow process but once there you'll feel so much better and more able to deal with everything. May I suggest you speak with HR? This is a serious problem. Your workplace can't simply brush it under the carpet. Hopefully your GP will back you up.

Thank you, I am in the middle of a HR/Union/Employer nightmare at the minute 😞 yesterday, they wanted to go away and design a deal for me to go away quietly. 30 years in the job and it all comes to this 😞 I am currently looking at alternative career options whilst they come up with a deal.

So sorry CL. That's poor treatment - especially after 30 years. I hope and pray you find a way forward very soon or even a new job with much nicer employers. You deserve better than this.

I use and swear by this Bluetooth Speaker Headband. Works very nicely as an eye mask too.I strongly advice from experience, contrary to advice you'll find elsewhere, is to avoid trying to completely drown out your tinnitus.

Anyway here goes and I wish you the very best.

Incidentally I have hearing loss, but I don't know to what extent.

Hi Crazylady6.

I wonder if stress makes tinnitus worse. Have you thought of strategies to a calmer lifestyle, yoga, meditation, therapy for the accident. My tinnitus revealed itself after my Father died, which makes me think stress is a huge factor in this.

I hope this is helpful x

thanks for the reply. Stress definitely does make it worse and for me, the T is a physical manifestation of the stress. In the last six months my father died, I have had problems at work with discrimination, been in a car accident and now work are dragging their feet with the Access to Work grant that I received! I am now off work and have been since before Xmas but the T just seems louder :(
