Help with Tinnitus

Hi, has anybody got any suggestions if anything I could take or do to bring this tinnitus down a pitch. I have had it for many years but lately it’s effecting my life. I feel off balance, can’t think straight etc. I’m on the waiting list for ENT. Thank you in advance

Hi Joanreags

If you are feeling off balance as you describe, and as you are noting that your tinnitus is heightened, it may be worth talking to your GP about inner-ear disorders which can create these symptoms.

There is a guide to exercises which can help with balance problems here: uhs.nhs.uk/Media/UHS-websit... and our self-help advice for managing tinnitus difficulties can be found here: tinnitus.org.uk/support-for...

Best wishes

Pat, the link you supplied just talks about the exercises but doesn’t give the exercises themselves.

Very good point, Rosie - I shall add that to my post. Slapped wrists and all that 😀

Rather than link to exercises which may not be suitable for all, I'm going to signpost folks with concerns about their balance and why this may be happening to the good people at the Meniere's Society, who are far more skilled in describing these issues than I am:

I've been having memory, nausea and balance problems recently.

I had CT scan where they said I was dehydrated (small brain 😞). Coupled with my own research (on the NHS website) the side effects of Sertraline that I take are similar to effects of low electrolytes. Given the warm weather, maybe it's simple as this.

I'm awaiting a follow up appointment, to ask about changing my dosage of Sertraline, but in the meantime I'm drinking plenty of water and with electrolyte tablets.

My situation is probably unique and neither am I qualified. See your GP!!!

when I saw an ENT person some years ago about vertigo he gave me a very long and detailed explanation of how dehydration affects your balance. Luckily I already drink LOTS of water. It’s my fave liquid. After wine!

what helps me is Dymista am and pm hold head parallel to floor and with finger on one nostril suck up as much as you can and for the next hour of you think of use you finger again and sniff it acts like a pump it up to you ear and also be popping your ears firming this time.

I was given these instructions I’m not vigilant with the hour after with ear popping etc and I still get really good results .

To be honest I did not think it would help was surprised after a few weeks the difference has been outstanding.

May not help you but its helped me and others

hi my mum uses the expression “feeling off balance” when she is emotionally off is that what you mean too?

Try doing this online CBT for tinnitus course with options of live therapy interaction, several people on here seem to think it’s helpful.

Some people prefer MCBT which is similar but more meditation based that’s what I did.

Once you get the emotions about tinnitus more under control it can really help with the minds reaction and particularly the minds attention to the tinnitus sound. CBT and MCBT are both hard work but worth it.

Also perhaps talk to your GP about how your are doing emotionally he may be able to prescribe something to get you over the hump.
