I have recently been diagnosed as having Menieres disease . Although we seem to have got the vertigo under control, for now at least, my tinnitus is driving me insane. I'm struggling more than anything withe the aural fullness and ear pain, as if it's going to burst. The pressure in my ear greatly affects my hearing levels. I have T 24/7, mainly loud whooshing which sometimes, and for no apparent reason, changes to a loud high pitched squeal. I'm taking 16mg of Betahistine 3 times a day which helps control the vertigo and is meant to improve the blood flow to the ear. Does anyone have any helpful tips on how to ease the pressure, apart from all the facial exercises and nasal steaming. I'm getting desperate.

Menieres tinnitus
Has your doctor referred you to see an ENT consultant. Most people do not get ear pain with tinnitus. I do get that fullness and pressure in my right ear, I have no loss of hearing. You are very new to tinnitus and it does take a lot of time to get used to it, try and calm down if possible and go out for many walks in the fresh air. However, you do need to get an answer for that ear pain. I had to go privately a few years ago to see the Ent man who did some tests that came back clear. I then carried on doing my best to habituate to the tinnitus , alongside this very helpful website. Good luck to you. I think other posters will write to you .
I have been seen by ENT and have a follow up in around 3 months. I believe the aural fullness and pressure is linked with the Meniere's disease and this is where the earache is stemming from, due to the build up of fluid and pressure. Will have to see what happens on my next visit, and in the meantime hopefully it may ease off a little.
In addition to the T Tube, medication and steroids I find a warm lavender pack over my ear and neck often helps. I think I started to feel a lot better when i found a consultant who had a specialist knowledge in menieres and cochlear hydrops which I suffer from, and got a plan in place. Its really hard to get used to in the beginning but eventually gets easier in time, especially when you have a consultant who really listens to you and understands where you are coming from.
A while ago I was experiencing vertigo along with tinnitus. I'm not very mobile so seeing the doctor is to much effort. So what I did do was change my diet, stopped cooking with vegetable oil ( seems the idea of vegetable oil being healthy is a result of cleaver advertising, profit before health) and made an effort to drink more filtered water.
This has got rid of the vertigo and following something I read on this site about an ear spray with rosemary oil in it, I thought I would try a cream I make for the ra in my hands. Just a dab on my ear and it gives such a relief. I had forgotten what it's like not to have such pressure and sound.
The cream I make has a mixture of coconut oil mixed with Flax oil as a base. With Essential oils rosemary, lavender and best of all ginger. Its smell wonderful and works. Not just for RA
Please note women shouldn't use ginger if they are pregnant.
Do your own research and always talk to your doctor if you are in dought.
Hope this helps
I’m sure they told you about eating salt. It retains the fluid
hello. I have bilateral MD and have coped with it for 40 years. I'm glad that you have found a way to manage vertigo....I hope you continue to have success with that symptom. I've found the following helpful in managing tinnitus from MD.
1. minimize salt, caffeine, alcohol and stress.
2, drink plenty of water throughout the day.....at least 60oz
3. continue with the betahistine EVERY day even if vertigo is eliminated. I take 64mg/day EVERY DAY. Be aware.....do NOT take oral (by mouth) antihistamines when on betahistine!!! Betahistine is a histamine. Taking oral antihistamines will neutralize the effects of betahistine. If you require antihistamines take only the nasal spray type. This type does not enter your bloodstream so will not react with the betahistine.
4. A significant cause of MD is nasal allergy. Allergies are particularly bad this time of year and can wreck havoc with your tinnitus/ear fullness. I use a nasal flush three times a day followed by a prescription antihistamine nasal spray two times a day (morning/night).
5. have a sedative on hand. I use Ativan 0.5mg as needed when my tinnitus/ear fullness is worse than normal. Ativan has a calming effect on the inner ear and usually settles down the occasional louder than normal tinnitus.
good luck.
Some good advice there thanks. I was worried about any nasal sprays being ototoxic, can you recommend one which definitely isn't? I assume the Ativan is safe too. I have read about some meds being ototoxic.
the antihistamine nasal spray that I use is Azelastine HCI. It is a prescription only product so you would need to get a script from your doctor. It is safe for you to use. good luck.
hiya. I find sinus relief tablets help unblock my ears and also moving more. Going for a “wonky” walk etc. Ask your doc to increase your tablets to 2 x 3 times pd
clonazepam .5 mg 3x a day has been prescribed for me and really helps the tinnitus especially for sleep
Sorry i haven't used it
Betahistine works for me - I take 64mg 3 times a day which seems to keep the vertigo under control.
Hi I was on Betahistine for T; it helped to deaden the ringing. I'm currently struggling with acute otitis media in both ears, worst in the right - 5 weeks now😩 The pressure has been awful. I found a warm compress like a hot water bottle was helpful.
Wishing you well x
