Hairdryer at hairdresser

Hello

I often read posts on this forum and wanted to ask if anyone has had any issues with going to the hairdresser where they seem to have very loud hairdryers?

I have been lucky to hear only silence for days and days (after the initial shock like a jet engine January 2021 ). By September 2021 it had all but disappeared; it stopped, it died; it retreated into the abyss - whatever it did there were days of silence and it was bliss.

Now this on and off (intermittent, infrequent) pattern has continued until recently.

The reason for my post is that when have my hair dried at the hairdresser ( a new local saloon), I noticed that the hairdresser's hairdryer was extremely loud. She was chatting and had a loud projection to her voice but I couldn't even hear her as she tried to talk while drying my hair! The hairdryer seemed to spike the T again.

Have you found your T settled again following a visit to a hairdresser after a nightmare experience?

I have noticed since then, a consistent tone is present but mainly when it is very quiet or in bed. It seems to fade away in most normal daily activities.

Many thanks!

Hi Pink6- Good to see you. I haven't been to the hairdressers for several years so I can't really say. I know you've been in a few noisy situations and your T has settled so hopefully it will this time too. The solution for me is a mobile hairdresser so I can dry it myself with my earplugs in after she's gone.

Hi Doglover Yes good idea about the mobile hairdresser. I will wise up next time and just have a cut without the blow dry!

I went to see an audiologist at Spec Savers and she looked into my ears and said that they are impacted with wax so that might be a reason why the T increased/changed!

Good to receive your kind reply, thank you!

Yes. Anything that blocks the ears can make T sound louder . What are you going to do? There are pros and cons each way for irrigation and micro suction. Whichever one you choose it's important to soften the wax for 7 - 10 days first with a product like Earol.

Well I'm using Earol to soften the wax. I'm not aware of waxy ears but the audiologist at SpecSavers told me I had. I thought ears are self cleaning!

They usually are but some people produce more wax than others. HAs can increase wax production too. When you've had them done keep your ears dry for a couple of weeks - if possible. Wax protects from infection.

Thanks Doglover, good advice.I've checked on Google and there are clinics that specialise in manual wax removal.

I think it's the ideal method for people with T . It's not noisy like micro suction and there's no water as in irrigation. I've not tried it yet but I'm going to next time if I can find a clinic near enough .

I'm going to chat to a professional about the manual method of ear wax removal. I found a site on the Internet called hiddenhearing.co.uk

i dont use hairdryer as i have severe T , but then even before i had T , i would let it dry naturally anyway ( which is easier if hair is short, i guess) - and I dont visit salon anymore as i find it too noisy. I am lucky that I have a hairdresser friend who gives me a short cut once every 6 months at her house or my house - and i often trim it myself in between.

I would avoid hair dryer as many people on this forum say their T has worsened over the years , often due to noise incidents or other reasons

Yes lesson learnt.

Hello Pink6,

I'm sorry to hear about the noise at the hairdresser's affecting you.

I hadn't been to the hairdresser's in years (my daughter has been cutting my hair) but realised recently it needed a professional cut to sort out all the split ends. I don't normally use a hairdryer and even at the hairdresser's I don't have a blow dry. The hairdresser this time must really love his job, though, as he insisted on showing me how to add curls as I dried my hair.

Fortunately, my ears took the strain on this occasion but you are right about how noisy a salon can be! A mobile hairdresser sounds a really good option.

Hello misspinner, Yes I'll just ask for my bob next time and no drying.

Thst is interesting reading all your comments regarding hairdryers. I have severe musical ear syndrome along with other noises 24/7. I find using my hairdryer gives me comfort - it is more like a travel hairdryer and not very loud but just feeling the warmth around my ears and head makes me feel better. I have profound hearing loss in one ear . As we all agree, we are all different in our methods of coping with this awful affliction.

I have a dry cut at the hairdressers. But I need ear plugs in if the dryers are on. I’ve been thinking of having a mobile hairdresser. It would be much quieter in your own home. I always uses ear plugs when drying my own hair.
