Spikes then silence

Hi everyone out there in T Land. Ive been a sufferer of T since July 2021.

My pattern is getting awful spikes which last 2 days and then total beautiful silence for a couple of days.

Does anyone have this pattern?

Life is really uncomfortable and miserable with the spikes but its fantastic in the days where there is no 2001 a Space Odyssey high pitched whistle going thru my head!

Help!

Tim

mine is the same! Couple of days of it then a quiet day. It depends on tiredness, stress levels and for me I think was monitoring it too much - can I hear it? Is it in both ears? - counterproductive. So now trying to go with flow a bit more and calm down! Meditating and mindfulness helps along with keeping active and busy.

Hi Mandydandy1 I'm thinking dehydration may be a factor as well as sleeping patterns! Ive got an appointment to see person who practices holistic medecine who comes very well recommended by friends. Hopefully she can help!

HI, i get noisy days then can ve quite a few days of quiet. Mine depends on the air pressure as I have Eustacian tube dysfunction. If its sunny but a low pressure comes in my T is terrible, loud and whistling, then goes away, almost to silence though not quite. Returning loudly when pressure changes. Hxx

good morning!! thank you SO MUCH for mentioning that your T fluctuates dependant on air pressure. I have often thought this was the case for my own inconsistent ranges and pitches of T since I started diarising its peaks and flows and silences. Thank you again.

this type of tinnitus is often noise induced

Do you wanna swap? My T is loud 24/7/365 (x 8yrs) which then spikes for no apparent reason to a unbelievable bad deal for lord knows what length of time. What is "total beautiful silence for a couple of days" that you refer to? Let me know if you do?

Hey I'm sorry if I gave offence, you seem angry at me. What I take from your reply is I am fortunate not to have T as badly as some.

Tim

Hi Tim, no offence taken, I didn't mean to come across like that though you most probably are fortunate not to have T as badly as others. All the best and hope you find things get better for you ✌️

I think tinnitus can quite commonly follow a periodic cycle like this. While I've had T as a high-pitched whistle for a long time, it has worsened in recent years and is now multiple whistles on a noise-like background. This year it stepped up and currently goes through cycles, alternating between squeally and hissy, usually one day on each although I can get two days the same. The positive in this is the hissy days are usually easier and can offer some relief. I'm guessing that yours is similar except you don't have the noise-like background, so you have silent days instead of hissy days. I'm afraid I have no explanation for this periodic behaviour.

Realistically, I think you have to be grateful for the silent days and learn to manage the spikey days. There are certain things that I can do to ease the squealling. My T is often reactive to sound, so on the bad days I keep relatively quiet - I tend not to listen to music, for example. On the other hand, I have found that listening to sharp, high-pitched sounds can reduce the whistling. I have a sound generator that can produce a range of Nature sounds, and birdsong seems to be the most effective. Even concentrating on a loudly ticking clock can work - I suppose it distracts the mind away from the T. You may want to see whether these things work for you.

Finally, a hearing check may be worthwhile, as the whistling may correspond to some hearing loss. Hearing aids help some people manage their T, as presenting the missing frequencies to the brain again stops it from making its own substitution.

Thank you so much for your full and friendly reply! It is much appreciated. I recognise I am relatively new in Tinnitus terms and it is good to know there are people out there who I can talk to.

Thanks

Tim

I realise that some people may be looking at your post and thinking what would they not give for 2 days of quiet. Probably anything but I realise that those few days of quiet lifts your mood up and then bang T comes again. That brings you down fast and lowers your mood. Spikes or bad days are awful for everyone. I have constant high pitched T for the last few years which I can live with but it seems to be getting louder. Also so bad spike days. It’s the fear of what’s it going to be like in 2,5,10 years.

Try some calming or distraction on your bad days and just remember you have your good days to remember. Take care.

Yes, I can have similar episodes of quiet when I get a day of near normality: I call mine “squeezed” tinnitus - because it’s still there but distant. However, I can get quite light headed and a little sick and dizzy, like at the onset of migraine , which in my case, I used have regularly before tinnitus took over. I take nortriptyline for this as this helps to control migraine symptoms. Incidentally, I subscribe to the idea that weather conditions, and times of the year, have an influence on my tinnitus too.

Good luck thanks for sharing you experience.
