Hi everybody, did anyone of you try this cure to improve Tinnitus severity? I apologize for my English, I hope you will understand what I mean. It's a really recent study!

Hi Antinni - this isn't a tinnitus cure, more of a treatment being used to manage a sudden onset case of tinnitus following a Covid-19 infection (which the case study described as severe).

For people with mild hearing loss or no discernible hearing problems, Gabapentin has been prescribed previously to try and treat the anxiety or stress responses which people with tinnitus can experience, with varying levels of success.

It makes for interesting reading, but the specifics of the study are worth considering further - the patient's tinnitus responded predominantly when the dosage of medication was increased and the course of observation was six weeks. This is one patient, observed over a small time window. It would be interesting to see a follow-up beyond this six week period.

This is a time period where many cases of tinnitus distress begin to diminish normally. Similarly, mention of a high frequency hearing loss is made, but not followed up on and Gabapentin is not a medication which is freely prescribed as it has class C status in the UK - there are concerns over users becoming dependent upon it.

Hi Antinni - I think it's interesting to read developments like this, and people do explore treatments like Gabapentin as a way to manage some of the physical stress and tension which tinnitus can cause. Before any group like the BTA recommends this approach, we'd want to see a larger scale trial which can point out the benefits and the potential deficits of the therapy.

I think what it illustrates is that no one approach works for everyone - with mild hearing loss, this gentleman might have benefitted from an approach like mindfulness-based CBT and had equally good results.

Our individual medical circumstances affect what treatments are offered to us - and I think a lot of GPs may tread cautiously around Gabapentin because of it's reclassification and links with misuse. I am aware of people who have been prescribed this medication and come off it despite success in suppressing tinnitus, because of unwanted side effects.

Interesting study. But just one person of the millions you have tinnitus and then caught Covid. It may be that some research can be done in the future to see if this can be replicated

I was on Gabapentin when my tinnitus started so wasn’t sure if it caused it

But, did you in that period of time, have hearing loss too?

You know good question. I hadn’t thought about that. I didn’t seem to have but I tested with moderate hearing loss
