Hi everyone, my name's Lyn and I've had tinnitus for 23 years. Normally it's quite manageable but during May last year it spiked and has been very bothersome ever since. It does quieten at times but then it comes back. I'd like to mention Julian Cowan Hill. He talks about tinnitus on YouTube. He has some wonderful and calming videos and talks a lot of sense. He helps you to habituate and how to deal with the spikes, he also has a wonderful calming voice. Please look him up if you haven't already. He may be able to help. Warm hugs.

Hello Jolyn ,Sorry your having an increase in your tinnitus , I am so pleased though that you’ve told us about this guy on U Tube. I will certainly be looking him up. I believe someone mentioned on here a while ago that he had written a book too. I do hope that your tinnitus calms down again soon . Mine is very bothersome , but I’m trying very hard to help myself . Good luck to you .

Thank you for the reply rabbit ... yes, please listen to him, he's very helpful. He has written a book but I haven't read it, but I do find his videos a comfort to listen to. I hope you find him helpful. Let me know what you think of him. Lockdown isn't helping is it. I intend to get some reflexology sessions when we get back to normal. Julian mentions that calming the body has a calming effect on your tinnitus so anything that's relaxing has got to be good. Take care and I hope your tinnitus calms down soon.

Thankyou Jolyn , I’m so pleased to hear from you , it’s such a comfort supporting each other . My noise sounds like a roaring fire or a fan oven . If I rest and I’m calm (like you say calm) then it calms down a bit with me. However if I walk around and do jobs it’s awful , running taps , boiling kettles and also talking toPeople on the phone or any conversation indoors seems to

Amplify my sound . Only if I walk outside do I find some relief .

Jolyn profile image
Jolyn in reply torabbits65

Sounds the same as mine rabbit, it's noise and movement activated. Doesn't the kettle sound loud. 😱 At least as the body calms and the tinnitus calms, we get a good nights sleep. Sometimes when mine goes really quiet, I think to myself, right, don't move, don't speak, just enjoy the little bit of peace. lol Yes, being outside is our peace and quiet isn't it.

I’ve never had mine go quiet , mine started about 10Months ago, I’m convinced I damaged my ear with an ear bud . I paid for a private appointment with ENT because the wait was so long on the NHS. Had an mri scan , nothing revealed . Told my hearing is very good . I am 68 years old . Had no trouble before 10 months ago . I did lose my

Mother and brother in law suddenly that hadn’t helped. Also the Covid 19 means we can’t see our family and friends. I do have support from my sister down the road and I live by the sea which is very nice. Anyway what I just wanted to ask you is , do you think it possible that as I’m building up so much pressure and amplifying of sound that it could be Hyperacusis as well as tinnitus.

From. Penny.

Hi Penny, how are you? 😊

Hello again Jolyn,Nice to hear from you again. Well my tinnitus is still very much about the same but my brain appears to be trying to “ habituate” luckily , so at least it’s less stressful , but deep down I wish it would go elsewhere!!!! How about yourself ? I must order those books people talk about that are helpful . Where are you from? I’m Bexhill on sea 😊

Jolyn profile image
Jolyn in reply torabbits65

Good to know you’re slowly habituating, it takes time doesn’t it. I get up and down days, so I go with the flow. I still run out of the kitchen when the kettle’s on though, it sounds so loud. Drying my hair with the dryer is a nightmare, I’m trying to find a really quiet hairdryer. My car irritates the T and H so I’m thinking of getting an electric one, I need to do some research on that first because they’re so expensive. 😳I’m from Pontypool, South Wales. 😊 Looking forward to the gradual lifting of the lockdown, I think we’ve all had more than enough and I don’t like being on my own so much. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thank you for replying, it’s good to hear from you. 😊

It’s good to hear from you too . I suppose one day ( many years on) they will find answers and cures to these weird conditions . I do try to get out into the fresh air , bird song is the best. Sometimes The Sea is too loud!!! Television I’m lucky if I can tolerate an hour. Yes the kettle is a nightmare. I let my hair dry on its own . I should think the blast of a hairdryer is more than enough to shock our delicate systems . Please keep in touch and if you visit Bexhill please let me know and we can meet up perhaps for a bit . 😃 Penny.

I hope they do find a cure, something nice and simple. I’ve been out over the lake today taking photos of the swans and their babies. I weeded the garden this afternoon and it was lovely outside. As soon as I walk in, it starts. ☹️ I can’t watch TV either, in fact, my iPad has a better quality sound, so I watch YouTube. I put earplugs in to dry my hair. I was thinking of having it cut shorter so I could let it dry on its own. My car seems to be a big trigger too and even when I’m eating ... if I’m chewing something crunchy my T goes nuts. Then it calms down when I stop. 🙈 Oh well, get on with it isn’t it. I hope it calms down for us both as time goes by. Lovely to talk to you again Penny. Take care, Lyn 😊

How lovely to see baby swans I don’t think I’ve ever seen baby swans . Have you got any pictures? . I take my poodles out twice a day and I’ve never appreciated bird song so much since having this Tinnitus . I find that being inside is much worse . Do you find sometimes a feeling that your trapped inside your own head and a bit of an isolation feeling. That’s another reason why going up to the field , woods or seafront a great relief . My mother had hyperacusis five years before she died and also my Aunty had Meneries too . Wondering if you know if it’s hereditary 😃 😊

Jolyn profile image
Jolyn in reply torabbits65

Yes to all your questions. 😂 I’ve been on two walks today, yes, the birds sound lovely. I’ve been over to the little woodland just across the road from where I live. I love being outside too. He’s a baby cygnet. 😊

Jolyn in reply torabbits65

Hi Penny, I’m doing ok thank you. Mostly head noise at the moment and quieter some days than others. This weather is great, being outside is so much better than being indoors. I’m out every day and popping into my neighbours for chats, which is lovely to be able to do after all this time. Plenty of visits to the lakes to feed the little flufflings and enjoying family gatherings. How are you doing? 😊

rabbits65 profile image
rabbits65 in reply toJolyn

Hi Jolyn, You sound so happy and settled that’s really good . I used to have neighbours I had cups of tea with where I used to live, I know plenty of people here now but I’ve only been here 18 months and we mainly meet up at the park/field with our dogs for walks. Just picked up my poodles from the grooming lady and my white poodle looks as white as snow!!!! I have to say I really wish I didn’t have this head/ear trouble as it’s rather taken some of my confidence away and it’s making me more tired. It’s very hot here in the south now, I must see. If I can go swimming as it might help my back trouble too. Why do we have to have these issues when we get older.

I’m seeing my family on Friday for the weekend. Be so nice to see grandchildren again . Do you have grandchildren. Did the baby swans survive ok best wishes from me Penny xxx

Jolyn profile image
Jolyn in reply torabbits65

Well Penny, I’d be a lot happier if I didn’t have tinnitus and it still drags me down some days but I try to be positive with it. I’m glad your poodle scrubbed up well. I bet you didn’t recognise him. Lol

It’s hot here too at the moment but we have thunderstorms forecast this evening so that should cool things down a little.

Yes, getting older is not for sissies is it. Lol We all have our aches and pains.

How lovely your family get together sounds, I hope you all have a lovely time.

Yes, the little flufflings are all still together and doing well.

Have a great weekend Penny.

I’m here to chat anytime.

Take care, Lyn xxx

That’s a lovely picture of the swan family . I hope they are safe. The other day my sister and I saw a mother duck waddling down a country Lane and she was making one hell of a screech , a nearby cat thieved one of her ducklings , I could have cried . It was so sad.Yes I have two poodles. One black and one white. Miniatures

Strange how reassuring it can feel when you read a post from someone who has some very similar symptoms to your own! Thank you for sharing 💕

I have Tinnitus and Hyperacusis and some sounds really make my Tinnitus go through the roof but like you (and unlike so many sufferers) it calms right down at night.

I went private too Penny, ENT first then Audiology. I'm so sorry about your Mum and brother, losing family members is difficult especially during covid. Thank goodness for your sister, bless her, we all need support from someone and living by the sea is a Godsend. You have all that natural sound to listen too. If you have amplified hearing it probably is Hyperacusis. Can you see and audiologist, they can test you for it and give you some advice. Even opening a packet of biscuits sounds loud and if I have to use aluminium foil it's really uncomfortable. Knives and forks and cutlery are uncomfortable when they clink together too. Mine comes and goes and the last few weeks I've been fine but I have a feeling the H will be up tomorrow as the T is in full swing tonight unfortunately. Staying in as much sound is best, but not too loud if it's uncomfortable. I was told not to use earplugs. Eventually the hearing tolerance level comes back but it takes quite a long time.

So it really is a challenging time for us , I guess it’s just keep going and hope for the best . Goodnight Jolyn and thanks so much . I am in Bexhill on sea , East Sussex. Penny

Hi Jolyn

Sorry to hear you too have tinnitus

Maybe this will help?

I had T since my early 30's - 71 now, after very noisy discos in the 70's!

Did fine with it, till 4 years ago, when it ramped up to a level that stopped me sleeping - so took Benzos

However, 6 months ago, looking at it in a different way, I had success by Redefining the T as NOT a NOISE or SOUND at all (which it isn't) but an ILLUSION/DELUSION that the brain has created, for whatever (unimportant) reason.

Worked for me and I haven't needed Benzos since then.

If interested, please see my longer Post from 10 months ago.

All the Best!

Hi there, thank you for sharing!! This is very helpful. I'm sorry you have lived with tinnitus for so long :( I've been getting acupuncture for it and it has helped amazingly,, apparently it is a huge circulation issue. Stress causes flares as well so this is wonderful for relaxing!

Jolyn profile image
Jolyn in reply tospringlullaby

Thank you so much, I was considering having acupuncture and your feedback is really positive. I also want to have some reflexology sessions. Calming the nervous system is a key factor in controlling this condition as tinnitus feeds of fear and stress. Lockdown is an issue at the moment. 🤷🏼‍♀️
