Noisy get together

I was in a noisy environment (birthday celebration) yesterday evening. The people round the table were all talking and laughing out but l quite loud. One person had a very loud voice (all having a good time). Do you know if being exposed to a noisy group of people can cause damage to the ears? I was exposed fir about 3 hours. One person projected his voice so much it caused me concern! I'd appreciate your responses.

Hi Pink6- I don't think so . Even loud voices probably don't exceed 80 decibels. How is your T today? My T sounds louder in noisy settings but usually settles within a few hours .

I went to a very loud concert last Sunday and I was concerned that it might affect my tinnitus. To my great surprise and possibly sheer luck I came away unscathed !!!!!!! 😂 😂. We mustn’t stop living you know.

Good point Rabbits65. We must enjoy life and still have fun. I had a wonderful weekend with my cousins and uncle in tje Cotswolds and have arrived home now with happy memories of a lively and lovely time. My eats are fine. I'm having the Booster jab next week so hope tje peace continues, touch wood.

Glad you’ve had a very good weekend . 😃 😊 goodnight

Noise is a real trigger for me and tinnitus- plus I prefer one to one or small group chats with my hearing. Big events are stressful.

Well done Pink - don't imagine that level would cause damage - and it is good to do things...

I like a house party so that I can hand snacks out or hide in the kitchen 😄

Hope your ears are ok today. 🙉 Lindsay

Hello again Pink6-. I'm glad your Tinnitus didn't get aggravated after being in a noisy environment, even if it was just conversational in nature. But, if you don't want to have this anxiety each time you visit a noisy environment, I would suggest that you buy a good pair of high fidelity ear plugs. These are also called musician's ear plugs. What they basically do is route sounds into a complex chamber system that reduces decibel levels, without muting sounds. It's basically like you just use a remote control to down the volume in your real life. They don't need batteries either.

You can learn more about these ear plugs that protect against loud noise at this Tinnitus ear plugs buying guide. It's quite informative - tinnitusandyou.com/tinnitus...

Hi Graz81, thank you for your kind words. Yes I will get the ear plugs you recommended for future situations. It was such a fun and happy time but with eight very giggly and personable people all getting together, it got rather loud (conversationally). Thanks for your recommendations. Colleen

Hi PinkI go to a few very noisy coffee mornings one in a room with a very distinctive echo, it does not seem to effect my Tinnitus, but loud music, emergency vehicle sirens and kids screaming and crying on the bus definitely does.

I struggle to go upstairs on the bus, I dread seeing someone with a pushchair getting on, but if the kid starts screaming it results in pain in my ears.

So embarrassing having to get up and go upstairs.

Hi Mike, yes it's annoying when kids on buses are inconsiderate to other passengers. Do you being ear protection? I bought a good pair from B&Q and 3M Optimim III are excellent. I have to turn off an office intruder alarm and the 3M Ear Protectors seem to help a lot. At best I hear only internal silence and peace and At worst I hear a hiss or ringing but it calms down.

I'm going for my booster this week so hope the T stays peaceful and quiet.

Covering my ears makes my Tinnitus more obvious, head on pillow for instance.

My tinnitus worsened 4 week after my first covid jab, therefore my second jab was delayed, which in turn means I am still waiting to hear about my booster jab.

Take Care

To be honest Pink it has not changed one bit, but I am learning to live with it.

That's a shame Purenostalgia. I'm glad you're keeping positive about the condition though.

Agree with the other comments.I have some challenges with this kind of situation. The Tinnitus means it's hard work focussing on conversations and lots of voices is a struggle.

I have hearing aids to boost voices and it can feel overwhelming in rooms with lots of voices. I end up changing them to the forward setting and turning them down.

Bottom line is rooms with lots of people talking or with background noise like coffee machines / coffee grinders really mess with hearing conversations.

I agree . I keep out if coffee shops with heavy duty coffee machines!

Ciao Pink6! Since I Have T I’ve noticed that I became intolerant to volume of voices, and urban life in general but at the same time they save me from my focus on it. I hope my reply makes sense😀. A big hug

Thanks for your reply Laura. I noticed that I could focus on one person speak and drown out other voices!

Since having T and talking to several audiologists I always use hearing protection if going to a noisy environment and I have found it really improves my experience, I regularly wear ear plugs on the train, at the theatre, rugby matches and music venues. The ones I use allow me to hear conversations while lowering the sound exposure, the ones I use are tinnitus.org.uk/shop/alpine... but there are many out there. A good resource for sound exposure and ear plugs can be found here plugem.co.uk/how-loud-is-loud/ . Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply surreycccfsn . I have Alpine ear plugs for sleep (which I got when having my MRI) and Party Plugs fir when my son got married (evening live band). Thanks for the links. Really helpful.
