Things to try that help my tinnitus

Hi everyone,

I developed tinnitus 8 years ago following a head injury.l had a few years of relief but then it started again in December with hissing, whooshing, pitches and electric current sounds. I had a breakdown at Christmas but I am now in more or less in control and the volume has have gone from an 8/10 down to 2/10.

To do this l took proprananol first and still use it regularly esp if the volume rises.

Then Completely cut out alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, black tea then added in anti-oxidant supplements NAC,omega 3, vitamin B complex plus naicin, olive leaf, hawthorn berry, hibiscus tea and homeopathic remedy for tinnitus with panic "Cimicifuga" .

I started listening to pink noise( white noise) and then downloaded a sound from " hush tinnitus" . This download infact helped massively as it blocks the whooshing completely and gives a lingering delay of quiet. I use this for any period when l am alone in the quiet.

One thing l also started to do was to change the words l use to myself and to ask my brain to turn the volume down and off. Like self hypnosis. After a few minutes there is a noticeable change in volume as my brain essentially is in control of my tinnitus and will eventually do what l tell it.

The biggest thing is to get calm, get lots of sleep by using white noise that cuts out after a while . I found if l use it whilst asleep my brain will mimick the sound , for it needs peace when we sleep.

Drink plenty of water. Stay positive. Show gratitude and appreciation and get extra peace and calm with daily meditation. Work with your mind and with the sound rather than fighting it. Avoid stress.

Good luck and l really hope some of the above may be of help to some of you.....

It is a daily problem but it doesn't have to ruin your life.

Hi Chopinique. I found your message really helpful and I know I should be doing all the things you mentioned. Instead , I’m sitting at home , crying and feeling sorry for myself. I have a cochlear implant and have had a lot of operations on my ear so in pain too. But will take on board a lot of what you have said. Thanks and good luck !

Poor you. I'm so sorry. It's just horrible isn't it. I get more good days now but it is unpredictable. Today is not a good day!

I find using white noise is really the best distraction. And start with finding calm.

Do an online meditation or hypnosis if you can. Try to smile and connect with nature. Go for a walk and take your white noise along for company.

Thanks Chopinique , yes sometimes it’s easier to sit down and feel really sad and depressed , but today I didn’t. I went for a walk on the beach and put myself out there catching up with friends. Because I had so many operations on my ear , I still get heaps of pain which makes it tough. I would never have so much exploration again as it did nothing but make me more depress each time the operation failed. Nice chatting to you 😊

So sorry for your pain. It must be awful. I'm glad you had a good walk by the sea. How lucky to live near water!!

Distraction is really the best way to cope. Somehow we have to believe that there is still hope of a recovery but acceptance perhaps for now is the best we can hope for, if that makes sense. I am in a state of deep anxiety and panic today as my left ear is driving me crazy and is totally blocked. But despite all the stress l still feel a deep sense of gratitude for the life l have been given.

I hope you have something very strong to keep you sane.

Thank you for sharing! I am new here...I experienced tinnitus last night and I do not know about it so that's why I read some information online that can help me understand some ways to help it ... it brought me to this website.

Discovered through research that CoQ10 supplements has reduced tinnitus volume in trials. So Good luck everyone ! I'm starting on 300 mg per day .

A doctor prescribed you Propranolol specifically for tinnitus?? If so, What kind of doctor?

When you said you had a breakdown at Christmas, do you mean a bout of depression from tinnitus?

Today I am having a very loud tinnitus day and can understand how a person could just want to check out. I can’t hardly hear anything over the noise. It’s so intense it hurts. 😭

I’ll try some of your suggestions. Thank you!!
