Stress and mental health

I have suffered with tinnitus for the best part of 5 years, and had mostly accepted and come to terms with it, almost to the point where days and weeks would go by without realising it was there, I have had a few relapses over the years, but have always managed to bounce back quite quickly, until now.

To cut a long story short, I was diagnosed with PTSD back in May after a cycling accident last October, I had some CBT treatment which greatly exacerbated the issues, and I was struggling to cope, so was put on antidepressants.

The first lot of antidepressants didn't really do much after the first couple of weeks, so I was changed onto a different one, this was two weeks ago.

A week after I started to notice some bad side affects, and as a result of those it became apparent that my tinnitus was getting worse because of it, the side affects got worse until I had to have an emergency appointment as I was on the brink of a mental breakdown, this was yesterday.

So here I am, suffering with the worst tinnitus I've ever had, and not really sure which way to turn next.

Thats a heavy package to carry sorry to hear.. I guess it’s trial and error to find correct antidepressant that works well and can take a while to build up. Do hope you get all support you need. Perhaps a focus on those times previously when you managed to cope with the ti to help you get to that point again.

Hello and welcome to the British Tinnitus Association forum.

Do feel free to ask any questions, I hope that you find this a helpful and supportive place to help you manage your tinnitus.

Medication for stress can be tricky to get right. You did the right thing in getting help when the first one didn't work, but don't write them off completely.

We have some resources that you might like to check out in addition to our home here:
