I have been suffering from constant nausea for several weeks - is this part of hypothyroidism?

Hi It may be, what are your results + ranges. How long have you been on treatment? What are you taking? You could try altering the time of your meds.It does take a long while to have the meds correct for you and also for the body to get "right". However, do not rule out other causes as sometimes it is easy, especially by docs to put everything down to the found cause! However, if it was going to be anything it would get worse,so may be worth experimenting first.

I hope that helps, not easy without all the info.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Hi Jackie, Thanks for your response. I have been taking 50mcgms levothyroxine for almost 12 months. I have recently noticed other changes that I have discovered are linked to hypothyroidism by reading posts on the site e.g. hair loss, no perspiration, ridged nails, dry skin. Not having read any reference to nausea, I just thought it worth enquiring if anyone had suffered likewise.

I had nausea before diagnosis and after for a while but it did go.

You are most probably on too low a dose of levo and this is a link re a dose of 50mcg. Cursor to November 20, 2002

Sorry, didn't mention - I have no idea what my results + ranges are. I had routine bloods done in August and November and assume the results were satisfactory, since surgery hasn't contacted me. I've never enquired about details. I avoid Doctors unless self-treatment for ailments fails - hence, my reluctant trip to surgery last February established that I had an underactive thyroid!! I didn't query level, just started taking 25mcgms for 2 weeks, then increased to 50 as instructed by GP.

Hi Never rely on a doctors blood test + result, always ask for test results and important ranges. Ask the receptionist, routine ,although they will ask your doctor first, always OK.,your blood! Often now the GP`s just do TSH, not the usual T4 and Free T3 as well, costs. Often what they say is OK, is not really!Make sure you have all 3 results, worse case pay through the site, I pay now as my NHS will not longer do T3. I have TSH, T4 and Free T3 done for £61 on line, does not involve docs except those you show for treatment. Details, if you want them, get back to me.

I know what you mean about docs, unfortunately for some a way of life, but it is our body and we need to care for it!

Try eating a dry biscuit when feeling the nausea, can work!

Best wishes,

Jackie

I have had an underactive thyroid for over 10 years now. Recently I have had a couple of bouts of nausea, each lasting around a week, and when I thought about it, I know I've had similar before - several times thinking I must be pregnant! This time, I noticed it seemed to kick off after eating, and I also had a bloated abdomen for around 5 days and gripey pains after a day or so, so I looked at my diet.

For me it has coincided with a new 'healthy' regime where I've been eating loads of oranges. I thought it was cheese at first and maybe a problem with digesting fats, so I cut cheese out for a while. I've now reintroduced it with no problem. Perhaps it's the combination of a cheesy meal followed by an acidic fruit, but I've had no problem since I've given up eating oranges.... One day I will try them again... Not very scientific I know!

Good luck on finding the cause. It's horrible feeling sick all the time isn't it?

Thanks for the response - constant feeling of nausea is HORRIBLE!! I've resorted to wearing travel sickness pressure bands on really bad days. I'm not eating anything different to my regular diet. It's a mystery!!

Yep, I have exactly the same thing. When I am under medicated I don't just have constant, mind numbing nausea but vomiting too. It's one of the signs that I need to up my dosage. I sympathise because it really is awful and there is no respite. Maybe you should ask what your levels were. You made need a dose adjustment.

By the way I'm on NDT. Couldn't tolerate any form of levothyroxine . It gave me dreadful side effects and awful, permanent........nausea!

Xxx

HI, Thanks for your response. I may have to go back to GP - I only go if all self help remedies fail to alleviate problems myself. Hence, the post about the nausea.
