this might seem abit daft, but can lack of sleep be affected by underactive thyroid? i've been struggling with getting enough sleep for a while now and just wondered if anyone else had this issue and what they did to resolve it?

Hi Yes definitely. If Hypo as opposed to Hyper, the sleep pattern is usually, sleep heavily for a bit , then awake 3 to 4 hours etc. I used to be up from 2 am or even earlier for years. Once the dose of treatment is right you should be much better. Hyper keeps you awake in quite a different way. However , this is one thing to never say to any doc. as they think, then that you are over treated. I have never found any doc who realises the difference. Make sure you have your TSH, T4 and Free T3 done, also the other things relevant. It should then become obvious what is needed.

I hope this helps, horrible not sleeping. I used to be a zombie!

best wishes,

Jackie

I sleep well now.

I found that most thyroid medications gave me insomnia. You will probably see many members on this Forum who are posting throughout the night or reading the posts.

I haven't done that for at least a year as the meds I take now enables me to sleep throughout the night - I don't know the reason but assume there is something in it which agrees with me.

Poor sleep and excessive sleep are commonly reported. And un-refreshing sleep.

Some people find that taking their levothyroxine at bed-time helps (some don't). Have a look here:

Still need to take it well away (two hours, if possible) from food, drink (other than water), supplements and other medicines.
