I'm sorry I don't know why :(

how long ago have you been diagnosed hyper-thyroid?

I am just replying to say we send you the warmest wishes and I hope you will get better very soon, if you have to be hospitalised then 'be it', it will be for your well-being surely as sometimes the condition has to be treated more 'aggressively' and monitored closely.

Thank you nobodysdriving......I agree if I have to go to hospital then that is right.....I hoped that there might be someone here who might know why, I have been extremely lucky in my GP and Endo who booth are taking care f me....but this site has been so helpful with answers. But I appreciate your reply

Also I realise I did not answer the question how long....I was diagnosed with Graves in November. My symptoms were very pronounced but within 3 weeks of taking 40mg carbimazole I started feeling much better symptoms reduced, swelling, heat issues, palpitations ...So it was a bit of a shock to get latest results of blood tests and for all this to happen.....Next blood test Wednesday fingers crossed that increased CBZ works eh

That must be really scary :( Do you happen to know what your TSH is? Sometimes the answer could be pituitary rather than thyroid, with the same consequences of course. If your TSH is not low, it could be your pituitary.

Other than that, I'm sorry I don't know what could be causing it.

I hope that the increase in medication does the trick. If not, ask about your TSH and if it is not below range, ask about pituitary tests.

Take care and let us know how you get on

Hi CarolynB, my TSH is increased as well, so I will check out the pituitary angle thank you. My GP and Endo are both great no issues with them at all they are in touch and keeping me informed, but my endo is perplexed about the increase too, so thought maybe here someone may have had similar. Thank you for your concern and I will let you know what is going on

That sounds like a pituitary, or perhaps hypothalamus, issue. If you are hyperthyroid, you would normally expect your TSH to be low, even suppressed. The fact that it is raised suggests a possible pituitary problem. Sometimes this can be caused by a benign tumour that results in too much TSH being produced.

There are tests that can confirm if your pituitary is producing too much of the various hormones but I'm afraid I don't really know enough about the subject.

I don't know if this link will help

patient.co.uk/doctor/Pituit...

If I find out anything different I will let you know :)

Hi again, my TSH is only slightly raised so am checking the pituitary angle .TSH was 0.02 now 0.04 Have already written down tests to check thank you. It is the increasing numbers on my T3 and T4 that seems to be the main issue...this is what the hospital and GP have called me about.

Oh, I see. Sorry, I misunderstood :) By raised, I thought you meant above the normal range. I see what you mean though. It was raised from the previous level. It does look more like a primary thyroid problem.

Have you had a scan of your thyroid? You may have nodules on your thyroid that are producing large amounts of thyroid hormones. Whatever the cause, this needs to be checked out asap.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

I have had hypo symptoms for years with a normal TSH but FT4 on the low side. Recently I had large nodule and enlarged parathyroid gland removed and my TSH shot up very quickly - confirming that I was hypothyroid. I am wondering if the nodule could have been fooling my pituitary somehow?

Hi Carolyn, as promised an update, my numbers came down, phew, still quite stupidly high but at least going in right direction, so did not end up in hospital. I am having increased Carbimazole (60mg) for another 2 weeks with another blood test then. Both GP and Endo have contacted me to ensure I have no symptoms to be concerned about. I have given my selff enforced rest and it seems to be doing the trick. Quite tricky especially when I get a burst of activity to stay still :o) but i think it is working.

Glad to hear you are improving. It sounds like your GP and endo are looking after you well too :)

Take care

There is a whole list of possibilities! The trouble is, most of them are very unlikely so it will take some effort for them to decide what is happening.

For example, if your thyroid is undergoing a period of thyroiditis, the stored thyroid hormone can be released and cause something like you describe. Or it could happen after exposure to large amounts of iodine.

All I can do is look things up - so I am not in a position to help much. What I need to say, though, is that if you feel worse, do get further help. This is not something to put up with.

Rod is right, if you are getting worse all of a sudden please make an urgent appt with GP (same day appointment)

Yes yes I will have actually been told to do a 999 call should I get any symptoms...palpitations, shaking blurred vision etc...oh and have also been told to keep as calm as possible tricky when you are called by GP and hospital. !!!

Hi Rod, yes that is the problem I have not found anything specific to increased and increasing T4 and T3....I am of course very very thyroid toxic at the moment. Both the GP and Endo have said call 999 if I start to feel worse. I don't actually feel any different, except I am now looking for ANYTHING.....of course. But I am researching all the time. Thank you for your concern though

Now you have made me see that you are very aware, I shall post a link:

thyroidmanager.org/chapter/...

Table 1 - right at the top - has a list of possibilities.

I was a bit concerned because some of the things mentioned could be very upsetting/worrying. And all the more so for someone who hasn't even been told things like 'call 999 if ...'

Also, this flowchart:

(Needs to be read carefully!)

All the best

Rod, both of these are fantastic and have now led me down a path that seems to make sense to me, well on the whole anyway, I think the chart Diagnosis I will print off, so that I can follow exactly what the Endo says. I would say I am on the far right...., I am bracing my self for an MRI (slightly claustrophobic but will ask for the glasses they offer), but bless you for both links both are brilliant. I know someone on this fantastic site would help :)

I found that concentrating on the "magnetic phosphenes" helped! They are small areas of brightness in your vision that come and go in some people when having an MRI.

Also breathe deep and well.

I felt the need to keep my eyes open and look at the mirror to see out.

I hope you understand why I was cautious - and glad it helps.

Wishing you all the best

Rod

I had an MRI many moons ago, and the mirror helped me a lot....then the mirrors were attached to glasses!!

Yes of course I understood fully re the caution.....

I will keep you posted

Hi Rod, Just a quick up date as promised, my T3 and T4 counts did come down so no hospital. Still pretty high but both GP and Endo have contacted me to double check that there are no signs that need to be worried about. More blood tests and increased Carbimazole for another 2 weeks then see.

Good - and thanks.

Would really appreciate if you keep popping your head up from time to time. :-)

All the best
