Newly diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Can I take Vitamin C as Potassium & Magnesium Ascorbate at the same time as Levothyroxine?
I'm sure not calcium, check instructions. Not sure about the others. See this link medicines.org.uk/emc/medici... many need a set time before or after.
Hi If taking calcium, Potassium ( very dangerous) or magnesium , they + sodium are electrolytes so must always be in range. Too high Potassium causes acute kidney failure, Too low cardiac arrest mainly only given in hospital with daily tests. I have to take it due to my 4 cardiac arrests etc but I have 2 weekly tests, the most my GP will allow!I have also had 3 acute renal episodes, coma etc. when low.In spite of loads of blood tests as Potassium changes in hours. These all contribute to heart and kidney acute problems, it is safer to take them in food, that is safe.Modern thinking amongst recent research is not to take vit C either! Cannot quote where as I never looked it up. I have had to stop taking any vit D which I need desperately as eventually D still low but calcium went to high, it does that!
Best wishes,
Jackie
When taking supplements always wait at least 4 hours after taking meds. Some supplements may interfere with the uptake of thyroxine.
Thank you for your responses. This is all new to me and I'm feeling quite unwell at the moment. I've only just been put on an initial low dose of of Levothyroxine, which is being gradually increased, as I was almost depleted of thyroid and my liver has already be affected slightly. Hence the hope these vitamins may help the absorbtion of the medication! Luckily I haven't taken anything with or after my medication as yet. I would be grateful for any advice during these early days. Many thanks again.
