Allergies/intolerances before taking levothyroxine and after? To food and particularly to Penicillin...

Hi

I was fighting autoimmune thyroid disease for a long time before it was discovered. During this time i had all sorts of all allergies/ intolerances. Things like mushrooms, beer, smoked salmon to name a few foods I could not tolerate without getting thrush. Now I am on levo I dont have that problem.

So my question is has anyone since taking levo, been able to take peniciliin, having previously having and allergic reaction to it?

I ask this as I have a terrible sinus infection. I've been through 4 antibiotics and its flared up again and the doc is asking if I could do Penicillin.

I had a rash and swollen tongue and ended up in hospital last time I took it, which was 20 years ago.

Hope this makes sense.

That's funny. The same experience as me with the penicillin 20 years ago. To answer your question, I've never had to try taking it again so don't know.

Hi I too have lots of problems with antibiotics and in fact many drugs. It is true that the correct thyroid treatment can help. However if once allergic to penicillin , the rule has always been to never try it as the second time could be much more serious. I would not risk it., myself. There are some very good newer antibiotics now, I manage OK with those.Penicillin is known to cause serious problems with quite a lot of people. I was once in the situation where it was the one antibiotic I needed but my consultant and I decided it too dangerous.

Thanks for the warning. he's trying me on Azithromycin. The infection hasn't gone yet - I've taken two, but my temperature has come down.

It's probably better to avoid the penicillin after all.

Hi I do think that is wise. You also often have to remind docs, half the time ,even the brightest do not look at their notes! The one thing penicillin has to be used for is Septecaemia, I hope I am never in that position!!!It is the only thing that works for that..

Best wishes,

Jackie

After still suffering from side effects five years later, I would not have Trimethoprim. And to add insult to injury they then gave me Tetralysal to help said side effects, only for this to make things worse. Someone on here said that Sulphonamides were not to be taken for those on Thyroxine and somewhere on this site there is a list. Good luck wth this minefield and I wish yoou well soon. Janet.

I have not taken penicillin along with metronidazole for over 10 years due to a similar reaction as yourself. I was then prescribed an epipen by GP. It is very annoying when you have an infection and I still have to remind GP of what medicines I cannot tolerate. I have been prescribed ciproxin and cephalexin (not sure if spellings are right) which I can tolerate. When i queried the 'in' assuming they contained penicillan i was told 'Some people are allergic to penicillins and can be given cephalosporins since the molecular structure of these 2 groups of medicines is different'. Hope you feel better soon and get some meds that you can tolerate.

Thanks for your reply. I'm feeling better after 2 azithromycins. But I'd like to see the end of this infection. The green phlegm & blood is disgusting!
