Just need help.

Hi there. Am pretty desperate. I've been unwell for 16 years. Under active thyroid diagnosed while I had severe post natal depression and was in hospital. I have never felt well since then 4 years ago I developed fibromyalgia pretty severely. Oh it's been such fun(NOT). I am on my own with my two teenagers. They are getting pretty fed up with having such a sick mum but they try their best. I now have no energy to do anything, everything is a massive effort and I can't think straight at all. I have been in counselling for a year and that hasn't helped,I just feel too ill. I don't have the money to see a private doctor as I'm not working and I really need to work again. I'm starting to feel like I cannot go on like this. I've stopped seeing my friends as I just do not have the energy. I did see Dr P last year and I tried nutri thyroid and nutri adrenal support but my anxiety went sky high I just couldn't function. Getting hold of Dr P was impossible so I saw my own doctor and she told me to stop taking them. I couldn't even do an adrenal spit test as I couldn't make enough saliva in my mouth.Dr P didn't seem to think I needed an adrenal test he said it was obvious my adrenals were shot.i don't think I could even get down to Crawley to see him anyway now,my driving is not good. My funds are also depleted. I don't know which way to turn and I want someone to put me out of my misery.

oh dear, poor you. Its not much fun feeling exhausted and down all the time, and sometimes we cant see the woods for the trees. Have you had any bloods done recently? can you post them on here? Have you had all the basics checked, you will read that again and again on this site. (by the way I credit this site with getting me to the point I am at now, which although not full health then a damn site better than I was!)

B12

Iron

folate

ferritin

all thyroid function

vitamin d

im sure there are more, but knowing where you stand with these will be a good start

Dont give up the fight, you are here amongst friends and we will try to help you and point you in the right direction, there are many many knowledgable people on here, (not doctors, you must always remember) but people that have had sometimes very similar journeys

Excellent advice from tingles. You could even start taking B12 now and see if it helps at all (but don't take iron unless you know your levels are on the low side). It is very important for many functions in the body. It is best to take a sublingual B12 supplement as you may have trouble absorbing it in the gut (many people do). I am currently taking 5000mcg daily and it seems to be making a difference. Don't worry if it sounds a lot, your body gets rid of any it doesn't need.

Please do get the above tests done by your GP. You would be amazed at how important those vitamins and iron are for your body to just function normally.

As tingles says, we are here to support you. Please also have a look at the main Thyroid UK website as there is plenty of information on there that may be of use. There is even a section on supplements in the "treatment" section.

Thankyou I will get my last results from my doctor. I do have some B 12 I will start taking it again.

I've been reading some of the stuff on the site especially about the thyroid and mental health. In the 70's my mum had a nervous breakdown and was admitted to hospital. At no point was here thyroid tested. She had another breakdown and then they decided to test her thyroid. Under active. She never really trusted doctors after that, she felt she went through hell for nothing. I must say she never fully recovered her health but her mental health did improve once on the thyroxine. At the moment with my troubles I am very much reminded of what my mum went through, same age as me. Reading other people's stories I feel such a strength in me. My doctor said it would be a psychiatrist for me next,I don't think so. But with all the hurdles we face in getting better how on earth will I get there?

You will get there. I'm almost there and certainly very much improved. I have written my story on one of the questions about psychiatric symptoms. It's the first time I've been brave enough to do it. I had no knowledge of thyroid disease at the time, which was my downfall it seems. I was also very young - 18 at the onset of symptoms. I did get through it in the end through sheer determination, stubbornness and a very strong desire to find out why I was the way I was. Finding Thyroid UK really made the biggest difference of all and I have seen the biggest improvement since expanding my knowledge of thyroid disorders.

I'm sure you will get there. Arm yourself with all the knowledge you can and remember there are many people here to support you.

I hope you see improvement soon.

So sorry to hear that you are so unwell. You have been unwell for a long time so it will take time to regain your health. It can often feel like one step forward and multiple steps back. It might be worth trying the nutri adrenal again for a while. I have been taking nutri adrenal for quite sometime with huge success. I did try the nutri thyroid but could not tolerate it. It wasn't until I read information on this site that I now realise that I may be deficient in vitamins so that's what I have started recently. I always try one new thing at a time so that I know if there are any adverse reactions. Doc P certainly knows what he is talking about, have you tried writing to him? I find that he gets back to me within about 10 days, I always include a stamped addressed envelope for his reply. The thyroid uk website has loads of great information which is up to date. You will find information on a recent petition presented to the Scottish Parliament regarding thyroid and adrenal testing & treatment, very interesting and the short video provides experiences of the ladies presenting the evidence for change, I am sure it will give you hope and you can leave comments / experiences. If nothing is said nothing will change. Keep posting & reading as much as you can. Hope you feel better soon.

Ok so I need to get an appt with my gp and get a new blood test done, that might take a few weeks unless I can get a telephone appt with her.

What is sublingual B12? I have some Intrinsi B12/folate prescribed by Dr P last year. If I go back on the adrenal support how many tablets should I take. I can't find Dr P's paperwork,I think he started me at one tablet a day for a week then up to 2 then 3 but I'm a bit nervous as my anxiety levels became unmanageable.

I will write to Dr P and see what he advises.

Sublingual B12 is just in a lozenge form that you allow to dissolve under your tongue. It is absorbed through the membranes under your tongue rather than the gut so that if you have absorption problems you can still take B12. I like the Jarrows lozenges personally. I get them from a seller on Amazon. I'm taking the 5000mcg ones for now as I'm fairly certain I'm deficient (many symptoms including macrocytic anaemia).

I would continue with the intrinsi B12/folate as it contains intrinsic factor to help absorption but it only contains 500mcg in the form of cyanocobalamin and, as it also contains folate, you might benefit from taking extra B12 in the form of methylcobalamin which is more easily absorbed. The Jarrows comes in 1000mcg and 5000mcg if you think you might be interested in them.

There are alternatives the the adrenal supplements that Dr P suggests that only contain adrenal cortex. You might find them more suitable. I found I was fine with the Nutri Adrenal though. I'm afraid I don't know much about adrenal cortex supplements.

Magnesium can help with anxiety, tension and insomnia. It helped me no end. I took 400mg magnesium citrate at night but only take 200mg at the moment as my multivitamin/mineral also contains magnesium. It has the effect of reducing high cortisol levels if you take it at night, resulting in better sleep.

Thanks Carolyn, where is the best place to get the magnesium from? I don't want to get a cheapo type as I know they are pretty useless. I've heard lots of good things about magnesium for fibro sufferers.
