I am working around this guys house today and noticing he was taking some medication I asked him what that was for. Anyway, he's hypothyroid, taking levothyroixin and he feels, much better!!! Lol amazing! That's the first time I've heard of anyone using levothyroixin with success! Lol

Thats because when Levo works there is no need to look elsewhere for answers so we dont get to hear of all those thyroid suffers who do really well on just T4 alone.

Wish I was one of them - life would be so much easier wouldn't it Si.

Oh god yes! Like how things should work! Glad it's worked for him though!

It makes me think we have a lot more health issues!

Maybe NaamiSue is right and a lot of it is down to our gut - its making me think as, like you, I have supplimented, messed about with T3 and T4 doses and all sorts of other magic lotions and potions.

Dont get me wrong I feel 90% better than I did before I found this site but its the other 10% that so illusive.

Dont fret Si - we'll get there in the end.

If you go to the blog section and search "naamisue" her latest blogs will come up. They are really interesting with loads of comments from others so be prepared for a lot of reading.

:D 'they do' exist LOL

I hope he continues to do so as well, or maybe he's feeling better as he's had an increase and when he has bloods done next the GP will get him to reduce his dose as his TSH will be 0.05 and after that he will be ill but the GP will say 'Oh no there's nothing wrong with you, your TSH is PERFECT, here's an antidepressant pill to make you feel happier' :D ;) (I know I am 'cheeky')

Luckily for some, they have no issues with levo and it does make them feel better. Unfortunately for most of us on this forum, we have a different experience. I think that's why doctors think we are hypochondriacs - when some of their patients do well they cannot understand why the rest are complaining, so they say 'it is nothing to do with your thyroid' it has to be due to something else so we struggle along regardless.

I know but how come it was so simple for him-6 weeks and he is feeling much better, increasing as he goes- to us months and years into it all and only a bit better! :0( why o why.....

nobodysdriving profile image
nobodysdriving in reply to sporty333

well, in that case I should 'hide in shame' as I was fully cured 6 months after diagnosis (granted on T3 but still....fully recovered :) )

erm, I'll go undercover now heeeeee heeeeeee x

Everyone I know that is hypothyroid is totally recovered on levothyroxine. I really was beginning to think I was just lazy or something until I found this site and so many others feeling the same way. I am much better on NDT but still a way to go. I'm holding down a full-time job now (and apparently doing very well at it - appraisal yesterday) which I couldn't have seen myself doing a year ago :) I'm looking forward to getting to 100% (or even 99%) and I now believe it is possible!

I admire your confidence in knowing you'll get there! :0) I sometimes have doubts as its been 9 months on thyroid meds myself and only a bit better!

But I wonder how many years he'd been suffering before he was diagnosed? I think people are OK if they have early diagnosis. Many of us waited years wondering what was wrong, before we were diagnosed.Often we were wrongly diagnosed. In such cases we've self pushed in order to keep going and burnt ourselves out in the process.Lack of thyroid hormones over many many years, must cause us longterm harm.My acupuncturist explained the blockages in energy that occur with thyroid hormone deprivation and it made a lot of sense. But anyway, good luck to the man! he'll never have the delights of meeting us lot!

Yeah I really don't think he'd been ill that long. He's only about 30. He had dry skin etc so went along and got sorted. I was getting ready to give him the speech on oh that stuff is useless to take and there he was telling me how much better he felt!! Lol I wasn't bitter.... Just glad to know the meds work for some one! :0)

Unfortunately as the years go on he will find levo less and less useful as he gets older he will not convert the T4 to T3 as easily as he does now. I think that is the main story I have noticed as people get older. Doctors say you need less T3 as you get older but I think this is very wrong and that if you have some form of T3 there is less likelihood of suffering a form of dementia or at least slowing down the damage caused by it!!

Agree totally with this! I was happy on T4 alone for just over a year until I started feeling crap.

Tests revealed I'm not absorbing nutrients well (gut issue) or converting well.

I think if more of us realised what T4 alone will do to our bodies we might be better prepared for it and it would work better.

But most of us are told, take this pill every day for the rest of your life and you'll be fine - no mention of low stomach acid causing low vit/mins, or adrenal issues!

hi,

how does one know if they have gut issues then? If you don't mind me asking :0)

Hi Si

I've never been tested, but for now I take Apple Cider Vinegar (with mother) pure raw unfiltered organic, if taken before meals/meds it helps absoprtion apparently. It's good for lots of other things too, like weight loss, heartburn (mines gone) lowering blood pressure, arthritis and more.

...and why have you not been tested Dannia? :0)

Dannia profile image
Dannia in reply to sporty333

I live in Bulgaria and health care is a little bit limited here. I've read enough of STTM to believe that I'm not absorbing hence low levels of Iron, VtD and B12. :)

sporty333 profile image
sporty333 in reply to Dannia

....oh, what an unusual place to be living! :0)

my B12 and Vit D levels were good! Iron was low in range though.....

Dannia profile image
Dannia in reply to sporty333

It's lovely!! Been here 6 years and can't imagine leaving the place :)

Now you say your B12 and D levels are good, but are they optimal??

If you post your results with ranges then we might see it differently to what your Dr says...I assume that was who said they were good or have you already checked here?

in reply to sporty333

My nutrition doc ordered a stool test which revealed sever deficiencies of three types of intestinal bacteria.

I now supplement with mega doses of probiotics and it has cured my bad zinc deficiency which was so stubborn it hadn't improved after supplementing with the largest dose of zinc allowed. I have got the feeling that the probiotics are doing wonders for my health because my body can absorb nutrients again.

Oh I see. Good for you kola :0) which doctor was this then?

I haven't found any vit or min deficiencies really so hopefully I'm ok in this area! No tummy problems really. I really should get my iron checked again though!

I agree with Glynisrose.

I know only one person who's been doing well on T4 only for about 10 years.. However, I have few friends who are on T4 only for quite sometime and even though I can clearly see they are not doing as well as they used to, they themself don't realise this, they put it down to aging and stress and modern life... I tried to tell them with no success and in the end decided to shut up and get myself well first of all :-)

Dannia profile image
Dannia in reply to Ocean2

Yes I have 3 friends who are on T4 only, and look massively Hypo to me, but say T4 saved their lives and what can we expect at our age! I won't accept that I've gone done hill suddenly in the past 3 months is down to sudden aging at 46 years old.

My 75 year old mother has been on 150 mcg Levo for at least 15 years and is fine. She is extremely active with so many hobbies she is hardly ever home, babysitting the grandchildren, teaching her piano pupils, travelling to Greenland, Russia and other weird destinations etc

I think I would have been fine on Levo too had I not had so many deficiencies. I am fine on Levo plus T3, but only since taking mega doses of probiotics, DHEA, vit D3, progesterone cream and iron for several months.

I sort of wonder if I really need T3 now my previously pretty severe and numerous deficiencies are so much better.

Please tell me more about your decision to take DHEA.Did you have your DHEA lev els tested first? I have looked into it but felt wary.Do you use the 7 keto type?I use progesterone, probiotics vitamin D3 and B12,but am going to use an iron supplement now.

I have been suffering from depression and anxiety for 2 years, after T4 only since 1997.I am now 62.I am at present healing my adrenals after seeing Dr Peatfield, but believe the next step is to add T3 or use NDT.Its all overwhelming when your brain's not working properly.I don't know where to start, apart from doing a massive amount of reading on this site (been too anxious and overwhelmed up to now,but am improving so ready for next step of my healing journey)

Am so grateful this community exists,Thank you everyone
