Could some body help me with my 7 days old daughter was diagnosed with TSH value 163. I heard that it is abnormal and dangerous and the pediatrician has ordered one more TSH test tomorrow she will be 12 days old. Doctor even hinted that she should be kept on medicines after the test result up to 2 or 3 years. She is very cute and small I cannot think of medicines to her at this age. Please advice if there is any alternative to this because I am worried the conventional medicines would destroy here immune system even more. Please share your experience and valuable thoughts. Thank you EC and the contributors for this great site."

"Doctors have declared it is hypothyrodism and started the medication to take thyronorm 50mg daily in the morning empty stomach ( before milking ) with distilled water.
Could any body please help me in this situation? I am very depressed- my wife's BP, TSH, Sugar all were normal during whole pregnancy and we do not have any thyroid hereditary evidence.

Dear peace 123, I am so sorry for these 'shocking' news, my heart goes out to you.
But please please please, do not lose hope and do not despair too much. The good side is that you have found out early enough to help your lovely little daughter and she can grow up to have a fulfilling life. The taking of meds for her will become second nature in time.
Hypothyroidism can happen in family with no history of it that is why all newborn babies are screened for it (with parents consent).
My advice to you would be to let your daughter have the conventional medicine at least for now as hypothyroidism not treated well or not treated at all can give LONG LASTING serious consequences to your daughter's development.
Let her have the conventional meds for now to help her through this very delicate time in her life to help her develop normally and whilst she is being treated conventionally you can explore and educate yourself more and with time find the best path for her to follow.
At such tiny young age the standard thyroxine is the best treatment you can give her I believe. As she will grow older you can look into natural desiccated thyroid hormone (but much later in a few years time).
Are you on facebook? I know many people don't like facebook but there is fantastic support group for parents of hypothyroid children on there and I can give you the link to join them. They will be able to help you learn more as you go through this journey.
We are here for you, please don't despair, it could be much worse (even if right now you can't think of anything worse), your daughter has a great mother (you) and she will be a happy child xxx
And I too agree with the above which is good sound advice that , if it were me going through this very worrying time, I too would be following. For now let the medics treat her. Have some peace of mind in this so you can start enjoying your little one even more than you are now. Congratulations, as NBD says there are lots of folk to help you through this . I send my best wishes... Here to help if I can
Hi Peace123, you're very welcome, we all have struggles here and we learn from each other and cry on each other's shoulder, this is what we are here for x
The facebook group for parents of hypothyroid children is this:
Hi I do so agree with nobodysdriving. It is always a shock when a precious child has a diagnosis. However, the doctors would not treat her if they were not sure about it. They do not even with adults and are so much more careful with children. It can only be a good thing that it has been found at a young age,it could have been in her teens. Now, she should make good progress. The earlier it is found and treated the better. If not, it could have caused all sorts of further problems.
I realise that this has been a huge shock to you, but at least she has been diagnosed and will be successfully treated. A lot of people here have had to fight tooth and nail just to get the diagnosis, let alone be treated. I wish you all the best and a wonderful life with your precious little girl.
