I have felt awful all of my life: emotionaly unstable etc and have recently had a diagnosis of ceoliac disease even though I do not have any physical gastric symptoms..HELP!
Are you on thyroid medication?
It's just possible that the Coeliac disease could be the cause of your emotional instability. Have you been advised to adopt a gluten free diet?
I am on thyroxin and have been since the age of 9. I just can't believe that the problems I've had are just down to eating wheat! Surely it must be a combination of things - even my doctor is sceptical.
Yes I agree... it could be a combination of things. I know that Coeliac disease can exist without gastric symptoms and can be a cause of depression.
However, I would be very suspicious of the thyroid issue. Are you monitored regularly for your thyroid levels, and if so, do you keep a record of your test results? Is your dose of thyroxine regularly adjusted according to your test results?
Please don't panic being a Coeliac in this day and age isnt like it used to be, There are hundreds of products for you that you can exchange from wheat based stuff. If you get yourself on a good wheat free diet eat as organically as you can it will help to make you feel a lot better. I'm sure your Dr has suggested a dietician if not ask to see on.
I'm sending you a really big hug.
keep us up to date as to how your getting on good luck

Thank you so much for your advice - and for the hug! I have got my app next week with the gastro consutant so we will have to see. Hope you feel better too.x
Just have to chip in - being Coeliac aint that easy. It's not a matter of just avoiding wheat, Gluten is the problem and this appears in very many foodstuffs. Lots of the free from products are loaded with undersirables. It seems to be acceptable to produce products like these on the basis that Coeliacs will be grateful and put up with the shockingly high levels of fat, salt, sugar etc. A simple blood test in the first instance will show if you have antibodies present. Then an endoscopy is required to confirm the disease. Two of my friends are Coeliac with no obvious symptoms - this is quite common. The disease usually gets picked up when other investigations are being carried out.
Hi Irene,
Thanks for your comments.
Haven't started the wheat free diet yet as I've been asked to
continue until my diagnosis is confirmed. Hopefully that will be
in the weeks following my endoscopy on the 3rd of Nov.
I've been put on calcium and Vit d these are very low following a
range of tests done by my endocrinologist.
Hi - it seems the docs are covering off everything. You should feel a bit better when your vit d levels come up a bit as low levels of this vitamin can make you feel low. You're right to continue eating normal foodstuffs until a positive diagnosis. Some people make the mistake of stopping before the endo just to see if they feel better but this mean that when the endo is carried out the gut looks ok. Not long to wait. Don't forget to update on how you get on
Irene
Hi feel free to pop across and ask any questions on our gluten free guerrilla group for Coeliacs as well. Did you get an update on your results?
