What is meant by a 'resting thyroid'

I have been taking various levels of medication since I was in my early twenties - now I am 61. I had a scan yesterday and was told my thyroid wasn't functioning - it was resting - what does that term mean and what are the implications.

Saffy,

I was intrigued by this term which was unfamiliar to me.

I still have not found anything like a definition that would apply as you have used it. (There have been various places where there write about resting as against active thyroid tissue. but it isn't at all clear how that might apply.)

Has anyone got a useful explanation?

All the best

Rod

Rod,

Thanks for the input - I too did a lot of research without anything properly defined. When I have seen the specialist - if I get a satisfactory explanation I will post it -
