Hello! I’m looking to tap the wisdom of this group with a basic question.
I’m on 75 mg Levothyroxine. I need to take 3x ferrous fumerate (am/midday/pm) and 2x famotidine (am/pm). Hopefully this will only be for the next 2/3 months.
What’s your advice on how long to leave between taking Levo and the other meds. Can I take Levo and ferrous funerate at the same time? I asked my GP but’the 8 minutes consultation time we had was by then used up and there wasn’t enough time left for me to do anything other than accept the answer I was given - that it doesn’t matter.

I’d take the Levo at 6am all in one go and then go back to sleep and then have the first Ferrous fumarate at 10am. Leaving 4 hours from Levo.
Although personally I wouldn’t have ferrous fumarate I’d get heme iron repair from three arrows and only need one a day that doesn’t get impacted by food etc.
Sorry I’m not familiar with famotidine personally but I’d double check, do you really need that? Hypothyroidism lowers stomach acid so it’s more helpful to raise it unless you have ulcers etc. so if you have reflux etc. raising stoma co acid and raising FT3 can solve this. Using an antacid doesn’t fix it. I’d go with Betaine with pepsin at meals and apple cider vinegar drizzled in everything. The famotidine will almost certainly affect your absorption of everything else, including nutrients from your diet.
edit: here is a link to an old post of mine about iron supplements and absorption problems. If you stick with the ferrous fumarate you may find knowing this useful too. Doesn’t apply to heme iron supplements. healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results
In days before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70
