Welcome to the forum Danielethel

TSH should be under 2, with many members here reporting they feel best when this falls closer to/ under 1. Yours is slightly elevated and FT4 very low in the range, so your thyroid could certainly be struggling.

GPs will not offer medication until TSH is significantly elevated on 2 or more occasions. A patient to patient tip for your next blood draw is to have an early morning test (before 9am) when TSH is highest and drink nothing but water before the test.

Do you have results for FT3 in addition to TSH and FT4?

Have you ever had antibody tests to see if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition (aka Hashimotos)? Do any other family members have a thyroid condition? (Many members report this- but in my own case, I’m the only one in my family!) Have you ever had key thyroid vitamin tests (ferritin, folate, vitamins D and B12)? Having these optimal supports thyroid health.

In the first instance, do ask your GP for the above tests. We don’t recommend supplementing key vitamins without testing first (and sharing results with us).

If your GP is unable to complete all the above (eg if TSH is within range, some surgeries may not be able to access FT4 and FT3 tests), you could look to do this privately, as many forum members do, for a better picture of your thyroid health:

Hi thanks for all advice.I have some test results

Serum ferritin 34 ug/l Range 15-150

Serum folate. 3.1. ug/l Range 3.9-20

B12 413 ng/l Range 197-771

I don’t have FT3 results

I’ve just been prescribed Folic Acid and I was having B12 injections which were stopped around a year ago. Before injection my B12 was 272 ng/l

I would work on optimising key vitamins as a next step. SlowDragon has great links on the best ways of achieving this, so will copy her in.

With ferritin very low in the range , I would ask GP for a full iron panel. Meanwhile, look to include more iron rich foods in your diet (dailyiron.net is a useful website)

Have you ever had thyroid antibodies checked?

Thyroid-Stimulating Immunoglobulin

TPO & TG antibodies may be Graves or Hashimotos (hypothyroidism)

 TPOab

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies

TGab

Thyroglobulin antibodies

Thank you, I’ll look in to this. I’m beginning to realise it’s a complicated area of medicine, I need to read up on lots of stuff

Definitely worth asking GP in first instance to test for Thyroid Peroxidase and Thyroglobulin antibodies, as many members with hypothyroidism have Hashimotos

Being in range is not good enough, the result needs to sit at the point where symptoms are resolved and you feel well!

Being in range does not make the result "normal"!

Your result is scraping along at the bottom of the reference range...far too low.

Your FT4 is only 4.85% through the ref range....we aim to have the result roughly approaching 75% with the caveat we are all different

You are hypothyroid!

Symptoms are a large part of diagnosis....or should be!

Your results indicate hypothyroidism!

You should start on 50mcg levothyroxine, test again after 6 weeks on that dose. Post the results for advice

Your results will indicate you need further increases, in increments of 50mcg.

Increase, wait and test until you feel well with FT4 at an appropriate level.

You must be feeling pretty rubbish right now but correct medication should sort that

Testing protocol....

Test very close to 9am

Test on an empty stomach....only take water

Test 24 hours after last levo dose.

You may need to test privately

We're all here to help....just ask

Good luck.

I feel so relieved reading this!! I thought I was going mad, I’m so tired all time I can’t function properly. I’m going to get private tests done and take it from there.when I get results I’ll post them

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply

It will take time, but more hormone will help.

Unortunately there is no quick fix, the hormones need time to work.

Yes, post new results and we can see what is going on.

Take it easy meantime and try not to worry

Next step get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done

Ft4 definitely very low

Exactly what vitamin supplements are you taking, if any?

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Post all about what time of day to test

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Did they give you a full blood count?

You're very obviously folate deficient, and that can cause a whole host of issues that currently you/we could blame on the Thyroid, but it could be down to some form of Anemia.

Hello.

I had very similar results to you . I am 40 and my ferritin also low mine was on 8.

We concluded my Iron levels kept dropping because heavy periods since covid booster a side effect apparently.

When I got my ferritin into optimal range was when I could see a true reflection on my Thyroid bloods. This is just my option and how my body reacted.

I took recommendation from everyone on here and now take all vitamins recommended to me and trying ro get them all into optimum range.

I personal found when my Iron got to optimal my TSH then actually went over range. I found when my ferritin low this also made my t4 also low like yours too.

Hopefully drs can help with low Ferritin and then may be test in 6/8 weeks time .

Good luck xxx

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I’m a bit confused with everything tbh

I’ve also got high cholesterol despite not smoking, drinking very little, walking daily and a good diet. I spoke to cholesterol clinician at GP practice who advised on a better diet! I questioned could there be any other causes but was told it could be familial

I think I’ve since read there could be link between cholesterol and thyroid. It’s a minefield 🙁

Yes there is definitely a connection between the too. I think you'd be suprised if you get your ferrtin to optimal your bloods will change. Like I said mine was 8. This page told me because I've Hashimoto's it should be between 90/110. Has the Dr give you ferritin to take? X
