Not thyroid related, but interesting for anyone having surgery "Sip Til Send"

I recall having surgery and not being allowed even a sip of water from midnight until I was 'taken down' at 5pm. I had a migraine by then! Anyway, it seems thinking has changed. I'm sure this will please more people than just me.

More than half a century ago, Nil By Mouth was being questioned. Nurses often let patients at least sip while waiting.

We were talking about that in my art group this week - the general consensus was sips of water were allowed. When my husband had his hip replaced a few years ago the anaesthetist he saw in the morning gave the ok to take water until shortly before his operation.

No wonder you ended up with a migraine - it’s one thing not eating but I’m sure being totally dehydrated can’t do you much good.

I had a surgery 3 weeks ago- before that I last had a general anaesthetic 7 yrs ago. I queried being told at the pre op that I could now drink water only freely after midnight up to 6.30am on the day of surgery whereas before it was completely nil after midnight other than a sip of water to take meds on the morning of surgery. So yes the guidance does appear to have changed. I had no ill effects from this new regime.

what a godsend! I have endured being ‘last on the list’ and becoming extremely dehydrated. Staying in overnight I requested my water jug to be refilled 3 times and overheard a nurse comment “there’s nothing wrong with her fluids”……..

I hate being thirsty more than anything.

Thanks for sharing😊

I dont remember anything tasting better than the ice chips I was allowed after an op! The anaesthetist does not want a dehydrated patient, as it makes his job a great deal more difficult, so I am glad the rules are changing.

Hello there,I had a thyroidectomy in 2022 and was first down in the morning.I can't remember when I had to starve from, probably midnight but after my operation I had the most terrible migraine, vomiting all through the night.I had to have anti sickness injections. However 2023 I had to have an operation on my foot after an accident and was terrified of the same happening again.I was told to drink plenty of water before my operation and a miracle, no sickness at all,I was very relieved. They did put some round sticky pads on the inside of my wrists, like those anti sickness bands so that might also have helped.I'm waiting for a hysterectomy and bladder repair at the moment so I feel more confident about not being sick after my operation.
