I hope you New Year got off to a better start than mine. I'm here on crutches following a gym injury that is still being investigated. I'm in do much pain, hence my early morning post.
I wanted advice before the Endo appt next week. You may remember that at my last appointment, I was told that now I was no longer caring for my deceased mother, I could have my thyroid removed 😒
Anyway, my position is still the same, NO! My blood results from 6th Jan 25 , I noted that only two tests were requested and not the full range.
Thyroxine (free) 14.3 pmol/L
Range:12 - 22 pmol/L
Previous in October:
12.7 pmol/L
Range:12 - 22 pmol/L
TSH 5.1 mIU/L
Range:0.27 - 4.2 mIU/L
Previous in October:
2.15 mIU/L
Range:0.27 - 4.2 mIU/L
This result tells me that I have moved from being hyper to being hypo? I want to be ready for any suggestion again of removing my thyroid. I am still on 5mg of carbimazole. In all honesty I am not feeling any changes or adverse effects. I am still very active ( apart from my recent injury), slight weight gain but still in my normal range, nothing else to really talk about. Is carbimazole the issue here? Can I stop it for a bit?
Please comment. What would be my best response? I dont know if I will have time to do a private blood test before my appointment next Tuesday as I am having hospital visits for my injury which might also result in an operation.😒
Thank you in advance.

Your TSH is much too high it should be around 1 or lower. You need to reduce the carbimazole or stop taking it for a few days. I am surprised your TSH has risen if i am being honest. What were you originally diagnosed with?
I am a Graves’ disease sufferer and you can read my story on my page
Also do not let your Endocrinologist pressure you into having your thyroid removed I have just read your previous post about the death of your mother I am so sorry for your loss All this stress can affect your thyroid levels My Graves’ was triggered by the death of my best friend who died of a brain tumour at the age of 46 years. I can tell you that time is a great healer and my own mother sadly died when I was 28 and she was 48 There is not a day that goes by that I don’t miss her as your mother is your best friend I am sending you a virtual hug (((hugs)))
Thank you Lora for your speedy response. pennyannie does usually give me great advice as well as others.
I was originally diagnosed with Graves and had been for at least 5 years until one Endo changed my dose of carbimazole to 10mg . Since then, I seem to have become more hypo than hyper before they put me back to 5mg. To me they don't seem to know exactly what they are doing!
Personally, I hate taking tablets so I am quite happy to have a break from carbimazole just to see if it helps.
Thank you for your virtual hug. Sending you one back 🤗 It's much appreciated. I am working through my bereavement through bereavement counselling which I really needed. Sorry for your loss too. Your mother was so young.
Have you tried for remission because now might be a good time to try. Stop taking carbimazole for a couple of weeks and then do a blood test to see if your TSH has dropped
Oh my goodness I didn't know keeping fit was so dangerous - I'll stay upright and keep to my walking !!
Your TSH has risen and now above the range - which tends to make me think this phase of Graves is over and your immune system calmed down again -
Your T4 is just 23% through the range - and you'ld likely feel better to try and maintain T4 at around midpoint - say around 17 -
So - what about reducing down the 5mcg Carbimazole to 2.50 mcg with a view to coming off the AT drug and seeing if your thyroid resets itself without the need for any drugs ?
Wishing you better and out of this injury/ discomfort :
Thank you pennyannie! I will try half a tablet from tomorrow.
It looks like my injury might be more serious as I need consultant doctor to do the ultrasound and not a technician. The painkillers are doing their job😁
Currently, I am taking vits C with zinc, D, magnesium, (for cramp) and B12. I do take iron periodically but stopped this due to biotin in the brand I had bought ( I forgot to check before buying).
They don't seem to check this for some reason. I will ask them at my appointment next week
