Missed endocrinologist appointment due to hospital error. I normally have blood tests done at hospital once a year and reviewed by specialist. I take 150 levothyroxine and 20 liothyronine. Specialist also told me to take vitamin d. Had test done as recommended early morning water only. Blood results as follows. Now told to reduce vit d may have to increase levothyroxine. But only if my weight increases. I have had knee operation so desperately need to lose weight. Not sure what to think with this.
Weight v medication best way forward please. - Thyroid UK
Weight v medication best way forward please.
Your TSH is over 7 and they're not automatically giving you an increase???? I would demand a second opinion.
I would also demand a repeat blood test because those results don't look possible on 150 T3 and 20 T3. It looks you aren't absorbing anything. Not surprising you can't lose weight!
So how do you do your tests? Do you have the blood draw early morning and fasting? Do you leave a gap of 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the blood draw, and 8 to 12 hours for T3?
And how do you take your hormone? Do you always take it on an empty stomach and leave at least an hour before eating or drinking anything other than water? And at least two hours away from other medication/supplements - four hours for some?
Why did they tell you to reduce your vit D? I can't see a test result for it. Were you taking it with vit K2-MK7 and magnesium?
Hi yes thanks. I always follow advice for the blood test. I have to have another test end of this month before I possibly may have thyroxine increase according to nhs specialist. I had also stopped taking cocodamol and reduced alcohol before test. I was unsure about reducing vit d. My son said k2 and vit d. I just started taking magnesium after this test.
OK, I see, but it would be a good idea to take magnesium anyway, even if you do stop the vit D, because the vit D you've been taking will have depleted your magnesium, and that's not a good thing. But, if I were you, I wouldn't stop it completely, just reduce the dose to a maintenance dose because the level could easily drop again. Doctors never think about that.
But you didn't answer my question about how you take your thyroid hormone, because something is obviously affecting absorption in the gut.
I dont eat in the morning anyway so with water as soon as possible. Coffee not til I get to work. So hour later. Lisinopril 5mg around same time
The only other change is liothyronine I used to take the tablets but they got changed to capsules. Specialist said there is no difference.I also asked for no teva brand levothyroxine so this should also be ok.
Are you saying you take your Lisinopril at the same time as your thyroid hormone? Or at the same time as your coffee? If you mean your hormone, that's really not a good idea. And could be causing your poor absorption.
Doctors will always tell you there's not difference between brands but they're just being obtuse. The active ingredient is always the same, yes. But what is different is the fillers. But I don't think fillers are the problem here.
Oh, same time as thyroid. I will change that as I had a knee operation and used to take lisinopril at night. The operation was afternoon so the hospital told me morning for op and meds.
Hi GreygooseI am just reading this thread, I take Better You vitamin D with K2; what type of magnesium tablet is recommended other than spray?
I don't think any one is particularly recommended. It depends what you want it to do for you.
One that will support vitamin D/K2?
Well, they all do that. But it's not support, exactly. Magnesium converts vit D to the form that is available for use by the body.
But, apart from that, magnesium is attached to different salts. For example, there is magnesium citrate that is used by people who are constipated; and magnesium malate that is good for energy; and many others besides:

OK Thanks. I have been using transdermal Better You, magnesium chloride
Looks like I gave you the wrong link! Sorry about that. Here's the right one:
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test
Is this how you did your test
Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription
And …Same brand T3
No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.
Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away
(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
What other vitamin supplements are you taking
Ask for vitamin and mineral tests to get results for vitamin D and magnesium and B12 as all cause issues when have Thyroid issues. I personally take vitD and K2 spray and magnesium as desperate spray as tablets from GP caused stomach issues. Most Drs know very little about vitamins so read up on them and take any notes with you.
