brand of levo

hi lovely people, advice please.

For the last 12 years, I have been given accord levothyroxine, never had a change of brand until yesterday where I was given one box of eltroxin amongst the accord. My question is, is this likely to cause me any problems? And is accord being phased out?

I have enough stock to avoid it this time if necessary, but I know there are some brands that some of you prefer to avoid.

Accord is one of the most commonly supplied makes of levothyroxine. Accord product is also available under the Almus and AAH Hillcross branding. (Though be careful as 25 microgram AAH Hillcross is Teva product.)

We have no information which suggests any current product is being phased out.

Some people switch makes and notice nothing. Some recognise they are sensitive to the excipients. And some just do not do as well but cannot identify why.

Try the Eltroxin while you still have some Accord left. That way, if you find it makes a significant difference, you could revert to Accord. That would give you some time in which to try to get a new prescription and find some Accord (or other make).

helvella's medicines documents (UK) can be found here:

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines licensed in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. There is now a specific world desiccated thyroid document.

I highly recommend viewing on a computer screen, or a decent sized tablet, rather than a phone. Even I find it less than satisfactory trying to view them on my phone.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - UK

The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrixes for levothyroxine tablets, oral solutions and liothyronine available in the UK. Includes injectables and descriptions of tablet markings which allow identification. Latest updates include all declared ingredients for all UK-licensed products and links to Patient Information Leaflets, Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d), British National Formulary, NHS Drug Tariff, etc. PLUS how to write prescriptions in Appendix F.

Also includes links for anti-thyroid medicines (but not product details).

helvella - Excipients

Details of excipients are in my Excipients document. This includes all excipients identified in UK-licensed thyroid hormone medicines.

Thank you helvella, I’m fairly stable at the moment, for the first time in years and don’t want to upset the applecart if I can help it. I will wait until I’m given my next prescription and see whether this was a one off. Many of my meds were missing this month as there is a supply issue again so I’m hoping it was a one off.

Am I right in thinking that Teva is the only brand that needs avoiding completely?

No - there is no blanket advice to avoid any make.

You might be someone who does really well on Teva. It would be very sad to spend years avoiding it then find it is better for you than any other make.

And I say that despite being someone who does NOT get on with Teva.

I'd sum up the advice as more in the direction of being aware of the products that exist and considering excipients you know cause you issues.

Thank you, I guess I won’t know unless I try 😊

I'd love to be able to say whether or not you will do well on it.

If any medicine is a problem, please put in a Yellow Card report.

Hi there , If you start to feel unwell taking the eltroxin please do not hesitate to contact your pharmacist and let them know and state that you want to just take accord .

I was swapped from vencamil back to accord a few weeks ago , but after a few days swapping brands I began to feel unwell mentally and physically. So I asked to be put back on vencamil and started feeling better within a few days again .

The gp is now writing vencamil on my prescription.

So yes some people can be affected by brands being swapped especially if you're sensitive to meds .

I wish you all the best
