quick Buscopan question

Happy Tuesday fellow supporters.

Wondering if anyone had side effects from Buscopan? I was prescribed last Thursday and took it that day and Friday and started to feel a bit off. Woke up Saturday with a blinding headache like I’d never had before. I tried my migraine medication but that didn’t touch it. Bear in mind I used to get migraines but never this bad. I tried co-codamol nothing. Then Sunday I only ate a banana, couldn’t drink tea or coffee so only drank water. Later I started vomiting every time I tried to drink. The pain in my head was unbearable so called in 111.

Everyone lovely til the Dr came on she was horrendous and told me to go to out of hours.

The dr there was excellent and once is saw my urine sample sent me straight to MAU to be hydrated and also had liquid paracetamol intravenously.

I realise that I didn’t take my thyroid meds, I felt too ill on Sat and wouldn’t have kept them down on Sunday. I took my normal dose of thyroxine on Monday morning and half my T3 in the afternoon and thyroxine at bed

I feel so wobbly, shakey and little bit out of it like I’m not quite walking the path but slightly on the grass if you know what I mean. Also my muscles just seem a bit weaker! I forgot to mention nausea since starting the Buscopan and increased HR usually run at 63/64 resting now it’s 75. I’m sitting here typing this and it’s 81!

So much for a quick question, sorry I got carried away.

Now you have literally my entire weekend hope yours was far more pleasant.

Thanks and sorry for long post 🥰🥰

Joant24, so sorry you've experienced such a bad time 😧

Why were you rescribed the Buscopan?

It's by no means the answer to all (so called) IBS symptoms, which is what GPs etc. seem to think. It's their 'I've given patient a prescription' 'go to', but so often it's absolutely not appropriate. Didn't work for me either when given it many years ago. I seem to recall nausea was one of my reactions to it.

I was by the GP. We didn’t exactly gel 🙄. He was running quite late and a little flustered. Would you believe this, I also complained that the antibiotics OOHs GP had given me hadn’t quite cleared a UTI so he asked for a sample which I gladly gave him. When I rang up for the results the following day the very sympathetic receptionist said there were no results he’d just dipped it. Now my screen has a note that dipping doesn’t work with me and all samples are to sent off. He’d just dipped and discarded. I was really annoyed especially as they say not to bother to dip when woman is over 65!!! I mentioned sepsis and my NOK will be blaming him. Another Dr rang me back within 5mins 😂

I still feel nauseous to be honest.

I didn’t know it was protocol not to do a dip for over 65s!

Btw, I find Colofac way better but you can’t always get it.

I get it prescribed for IBS, its a bit meh tbh but due to rising costs its one of the few IBS meds you can get. The best one I ever use was a liquid, Kolanticon gel, a 4 in 1, antacid, antispasmodic, antibloating.

It tasted vile but was very effective. Sadly it went out of stock about 2 years ago and doesn't appear to be back in. It was a last resort medication when all else had failed.

A pharmacist I know cynically said they'd probably realised they could make more money from selling 4 different medicines rather than having an all in one. I've never had any adverse reactions to Buscopan, I just dont find it very good. I dont use it much now.

I’ve used it for years for IBS type symptoms. Found it very good and if anything quite mild. I can take two every 4 hours. Don’t know what your dose is. Basically it’s an anti spasmodic.

One three times a day. I felt nauseous fairly soon after taking. I don’t think I’ll bother again. Plus it loosened my muscles a little too much as I’ve never broken wind so much in my entire life. Every 10 mins I swear and very noisy plus belching which I never really do. I couldn’t have sat in the same room with anyone other than very close family 😂

If you prefer a more natural solution you could try charcoal tablets, available online or peppermint capsules. You can buy them online or in chemists and health shops. I've used them in the past. I found they did give a bit of a weird cold sensation in your stomach though. Is it cramping or bloating you suffer from or both?

Both really, the pain the other day after eating too much fibre was awful. Spasms of cramps working down my gut. Usually I get wind and loose poop and whenever I eat I get bloated. The wind whilst on these was something else I sounded like an elephant on steroids. I’ve tried charcoal years ago and was running to the loo often but not tried peppermint oil or capsules. I shall try that as my next step.

Thank you

There are also teas like peppermint or chamomile that can help relieve cramping. I have migraines as well and IBS and migraine often go together. Basically we have oversensitive nervous systems that amplify sensations like pain, discomfort. Interestingly migraine sufferers are often very sensitive to medications as well.

Interesting. I was peeved as since menopause I’ve not had painful migraine, if I do it’s a painless one just my vision goes peculiar and never as painful as this one. I didn’t have any vision issues this time and so I was worried this was something else. Thank you.

I was prescribed it for painful, back muscle spasms. I couldn’t tolerate it as it affected my bladder. I was peering every half an hour. I’m sorry you had such an awful experiance with it, Reading the the patient information leaflet I was amazed by the number & severity of the side effects. It doesn’t seem a drug I’d want to use for IBS which I also have.

I’ve found Toxaprevent by Nouvelle Health very useful. It’s a form of clay which you take in a capsule when you eat. Really has helped.

Majority of my symptoms went when I stopped eating cow dairy & gluten. Have you tried an exclusion diet? Essential for IBS sufferers really. I can tolerate sheep milk yoghurt & cheese and buffalo mozzarella but not cows’ milk. It’s really worth experimenting.

I couldn’t agree more not a pill I will ever pop again!

I’ve excluded dairy for many years and a few months ago I stopped alcohol mainly because of the effects the following morning.

I’m going to try peppermint oil/tea etc next and if that doesn’t help will look at your suggestion which has me intrigued. Thanks again.
