I’ve learned so much about Grave’s disease and TED here. This popped up on Medscape today: medscape.com/viewarticle/10...?
Know Your Options: Thyroidectomy for Graves Disease.
It’s lengthy, and a pretty good discussion of options, including their frustration that they are only treating the results, not the cause of Graves. I was disappointed they didn’t get more into the long-term effects of RAI which we see more of on the thyroid cancer boards but overall it can give someone deciding on how they want to be treated some background for asking the right questions when they see their doctors.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. Personally, I would choose surgery over RAI but would first want to check how many successful thyroidectomies my surgeon had carried out. A Graves patient does need to consider all options carefully according to their personal circumstances. This podcast is from America. The Doctor said she recommended Thyroidectomy for patients with TED, future pregnancies and those having difficulty controlling their TH levels with meds. In the US, block and replace is seldom recommended which could be a solution to stabilising levels and perhaps avoiding the need to operate.
