Hi. My daughter, 43, has cholesterol level of 10.3. Her GP is utterly unconcerned. She is tested for hypthyroidism (as this is prevalent in the family) and other things, but she tells me all other tests are normal. Why isn't her doctor bothered about this cholesterol level. Mine is five point something.

I'm guessing that is Hypo? She really needs to get a full thyroid panel... I'm amazed they didn't just force statins on her!

she tells me all other tests are normal.

what are the actual results and what was actually tested

she needs to get full thyroid including thyroid antibodies and vitamin testing

For full Thyroid evaluation TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if hypothyroidism is autoimmune

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

For good conversion of Ft4 (levothyroxine) to Ft3 (active hormone) we must maintain GOOD vitamin levels

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Also VERY important to test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 together

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

SlowDragon, can I ask why just before 9 is best for testing thyroid please? I was under impression the earlier the better, but is it a case of TSH rising to a peak when we've been awake a certain amount of time? I've just completed a fingerprint test at 7.30am today thinking that and now thinking whoops?:) I'll be amazed if it works, so at least I'll know for nxt time! Did all the usual tricks, 1st finger not bad,but my aim obv not good 2day as first lovely 5 spots went on floor! So was scowling at those missing the target, whilst pricking 3 more fingers to get anything. Its a strange job, sometimes I could fill two pots with one finger, another time it is literally getting blood from a stone!:) ho hum!

Hi there. Has your daughter had the specific test for familial hypercholesterolemia ? My doctor could bever work out why mine was so high. 8.3 at the time with great diet abd good exercise regime and I was 57 at the time. Turned out to have heterozygous FH from my dad's side of the family. My mum always had very low levels of cholesterol .
