Welcome to our forum Lrv44221

Yes, a thyroid condition could be a cause of being unable to sleep.

But, we need to see your thyroid test results to be able to say anything more. Can you post these please. Ideally, we need to see:

TSH, FT3, FT4, plus thyroid antibodies

Ty very much my tsh was 0.35

Ft3 was 3.5

Ft4 was 1.0

Every lab can have different ranges, so we need the accompanying ranges to make any sense of these numbers. Ranges in the US are different to ranges in the UK too. 😊

Lrv44221 in reply toRedApple

Tsh range——0.40—5.50

ft3 range/———2.4/—-4.2

Ft4 range———0.8—1.8

Hello Lrv :

Are you taking any thyroid hormone replacement medication T4 ?

Your T3 and T4 are in the ranges and your TSH just a little below the range -

but I'd tend to trust the doctor as he knows your situation better -

Do you know the name and range for the antibody blood test ?

Just looking back you have enough going on without worrying about something else :

For me, in my 70,s I just don’t want to deal with much anymore. I don’t have a dr because the first nurse practitioner was a jerk and wanted me on her drug of choice with only one test the tsh Second dr also wanted me to take a drug no tests so I asked for the complete thyroid panel

IBS is yucky and I like you always know where a bathroom is

My antibody was <1 which is in the range of 1

Here in the USA the big thing I don’t like is big pharma pushes drs to prescribe drugs or loose their liscence

It’s disgusting 🤢

Yes I understand :

was test early morning

Free T4 (fT4) 1.0 pmol/L (0.8 - 1.8) 20.0%

Free T3 (fT3) 3.5 pmol/L (2.4 - 4.2) 61.1%

Ft4 is LOW

IBS common with autoimmune HYPOthyroid, also called Hashimoto’s

Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and/or symptoms (eg your low TSH)

Rapid swings in Ft4 and /or Ft3 levels are common too

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

which thyroid antibodies have been tested?

Ty slow dragon

My tests were 1 pm your advice was very much appreciated

All the ferritin b12 and vitamins were good

So do i ask for ft4 or what?

I’m also new to this site and appreciate any advice

I’m also going to find a dr and then possibly get te tested

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toLrv44221

Please add actual results and ranges on vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

USA rarely seems to test Folate

You need TPO and TG antibodies tested

Presumably antibodies already tested were for Graves’ disease (hyperthyroid) - TSI or Trab antibodies

Retest thyroid in another 6 weeks

Book early morning test

I already love this site. So many great people offering to help me

Ferritin was 74 range—-16-28

Vitamin B12 780 range/——200-1100

Vitamin d 60 range——-30-100

Folate >2.40 range——>5.4

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toLrv44221

So folate is low

what vitamin supplements are you taking

Ferritin range 16-280?

Lrv44221 profile image
Lrv44221 in reply toSlowDragon

They didn’t have a ferritin range I was kind of concerned. I take so many supplements that I don’t know if you would want to take all of them , however some of the ones that I think are really helpful for me are vitamin b12, d , probiotics

And berberine

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toLrv44221

That sure as hell sounds like myself before I was properly diagnised as "borderline" hyperyhyroid.. baking cakes and cleaning at 2am as the norm!! as I could not sleep even after a busy day!!and thin as a rake.. In the dreariness of a Scottish winter not the sun of Florida. Had my healthy thyroid removed to stop it and I went the other way ...hypothyroid which was really difficult to get normalish thyroxine levels so I felt well..after some considerable time..years.!! .I now feel like me...sleeping /eating properly but I had to do it through the knowledge gained from this site as doctors and nurses here in UK really dont understand it and treat you from what your bloods tell them i.e TSH only!( if on levothyroxine which shows them absolutely nothing at all or about what you feel like because you are on a replacement) (levothyroxine) FT3 and FT4 need to be what bloods show and how you feel which is the important aspect of it all... and optimal vitamins B12..and vit D very important.Read "Grey Goose"posts on here .. she has her finger on the button .. good luck on your eventful trip.. from a very cloudy Scotland...

Ty so much for sharing this. Since I don’t care for most doctors this site is my go to. Yes i enjoy grey goose she tells it like it is and I’m very similar

Since i became a degreed certified nutritionist i realized it was not easy trying to help people with nutrition because their doctors always told them about the drugs they were advocating

So between my training and the help I’m getting here I hope to feel better

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to help me :)

Need to know (at least) what your TSH is. If your TSH is well under 1, that could be causing sleep problems.

Hello Ty for offering to give me some advice

My tsh is 0.35

Eddie83 profile image
Eddie83 in reply toLrv44221

My doc, and most functional medicine docs, like TSH in the range 1.0-2.0. Reduce your dose until TSH~=1.5. If you still can't sleep, would recommend trying some combination of theanine and GABA.

I'm wondering if you have had a cortisol test (not blood). You can order a 4 point saliva test online. For me, I had hypoadrenia which was keeping me awake. Due to shift work, my cortisol/melatonian cycle was off. Of course I had a vitamin deficientcies which needed to be addressed also. About 4 hours before you wake up your bodies production of cortisol raises and your melatonin lowers. This "cycle" is what wakes you up. "IF" your cortisol levels are low (hypoadrenia) then the body will go to it's second hormone which is adrenaline. This will wake you up quickly and not allow you to go back to sleep. This "cycle" helps regulate you circadian rhythm. Your adrenals and thyroid work hand in hand. You need good iron/cortisol levels to convert FT4 to FT3. My FT3 has to be in the high 3.? to low 4.? to be optimal. My FT4 has to be 50% of range so in the 0.8-1.8 range I would have to be 1.3. Since your FT4/ is definitely low and FT3 could be higher and you say you have a sleeping issue this makes me think low cortisol. Only a test would confirm it. Wondering about your RT3...

I’m pretty sure I have that situation

What remedy does one take to reverse the cortisol adrenaline syndrome?

dealsgap profile image
dealsgap in reply toLrv44221

You'll need to get the saliva cortisol test to make sure and to see exactly what your cortisol cycle looks like (when you are deficient during a 24 hour period). You can supplement with ACE (adrenal cortex extracts) which you can get online (do some research/don't use google? it will tell you that you will die if you look at a supplement..8^)...I'll send you the one I used to your personal mail...

I think "personal mail" is a mistaken way of referring to "Private Messages", which as you rightly mention, is also called "Chat".
