PTU and tingling

hi I’m on PTU 50mg twice per day. Started it about 8 weeks ago. Thing is I’ve got tingling in my feet and back and arms. Is this a side effect? Will it subside? It’s so irritating!

So after 8 weeks its time to get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing

Low B12, folate and vitamin D are all common with autoimmune diseases

Low B12 frequently causes pins and needles

When were these last tested

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Test thyroid levels early morning

Stop any supplements that contain biotin 5-7 days before test

Sorry I didn’t see this reply.

So if I ask for full thyroid (do I need to be more specific?!)

B12 Folate and Vitamin D is that sufficient?

Thanks

You need TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

And ferritin (storage form of iron)

Can you get ft4 and 3 from a GP? Thanks

Hey there again :

Has the anxiety eased - do you have any new symptoms apart from this tingling -

which could be down to too low levels of the core strength vitamins and minerals -

do you have readings / ranges for ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D ?

When is your next hospital appointment -

Have you been able to get your initial results when diagnosed showing the TSH + T3 and T4 readings and ranges - you are legally entitled to copies of all blood tests -

I think all we have had is a positive TRab for Graves Disease ?

Have you had any follow up TSH T3 and T4 blood test results since being on the Anti Thyroid drugs ?

Hi thanks for replying.

Anxiety’s not lessened at all I’ve started counselling and anti depressants :(

I first thought maybe vitamin b6 could be causing the tingling but I’m only taking 100mg per day, think it has to be over 500mg to chance becoming toxic. So it must be the ptu causing the tingling. It’s awful. Can feel it loads in my feet in bed. Sometimes head. And that sensation obviously doesn’t help with the anxiety.

I’ll go and look at my bloods and be right back

When do you next see an endocrinologist - should be every 6 - 8 weeks ?

From what I can gather I’ll see a nurse from endocrinology not a consultant. In a few weeks time. I’ve spoken to her on the phone, can’t see what they can suggest if I reacted badly to Carbimazole (terrible rash everywhere) and now this, there’s no other options are there?

No - I'm afraid not :

Maybe your dose of the PTU needs adjusting down now and that might make things more tolerable :

Thinking on  Kiki_76

Your B12 was very low 2 months ago ? Has anything been done about this ?

Your T4 has been in range some 4 months now :

What are your latest TSH - T3 and T4 readings / ranges ?

I’ve just read that propranolol can interfere with ptu! My gp told me to increase the propranolol for my anxiety.

Generally speaking Propranolol is prescribed for anxiety -

and the way it ' interferes with PTU ' is that it tends to slow the conversion of thyroid hormones - which if overactive is not seen as a negative :

Did you find some blood test readings - TSH + T3 + T4 -

and has anything happened with your very low B12 reading from 2 months ago ?

Not what you're looking for?
