Hi I have had results which I posted recently. I have primary hypothyroidism and have problems converting t4 to t3. My t3 is 2.7 at present and my cholesterol is 5.7 . Which my gp says is fine , although iy is above range . Any thought or advice would be most welcome

I think some here have said low FT3 correlates to higher cholesterol. How is your FT4 are you due an increase in Levo dose? Do you take T3?
Are your LDL and HDL both high or one low and one high? Hubby has an inherited condition that means his HDL is crazy low so has to be super careful. Almost impossible to raise it, we are trying all sorts.

previous posts show very low Ft3 and poor conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

So going to need addition of T3 prescribed alongside levothyroxine
Roughly where in U.K. are you
Some areas more difficult than others to get prescribed
Your doctor is right, it's not a problem. It's a symptom, not a disease. And cholesterol doesn't do any harm. It doesn't cause heart attacks or strokes. In fact, there's some proof that those with higher cholesterol levels tend to live longer. It's low cholesterol that is dangerous. So, don't worry about it.
Thank You GG for your very very Sensible response. We need cholesterol to make different hormones that we need.
Oh, not just for that. For reparation and regeneration because cell walls are made of cholesterol, as is a lot of the brain. And we need it to repair damaged arteries to protect us from heart attacks. Cholesterol is a very important part of the body. But, as usual, bad science has turned the whole thing upside-down and an essentail element suddenly becomes the enemy, like fat and salt.
I'm often nagged by my doctor to take statins. I've had much higher readings than you (8.7 the highest, and 6.7 last year). I have argued that it's another sign that my thyroid needs better treatment and they have learned to leave me alone about it. Recently, it was 5.2. Because I have atrial fibrillation, they would still prefer my cholesterol to be well under 5 - doctors in general seem to still be obsessed about cholesterol - but I am completely happy with it being in the normal range. I agree that cholesterol isn't dangerous, except perhaps if it's very high and other factors are in place to make you vulnerable to heart problems. However, it can be a sign that your thyroid is undertreated, and/or that you have inflammation. So I would take SlowDragon's advice to try and get T3.
