welcome to the forum
Your GP should be retesting blood levels regularly
Your dose of Carbimazole may need reducing a little
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested
you should have had TSI and/or Trab antibodies for Graves’ disease (autoimmune hyperthyroid)
Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once as autoimmune hypothyroidism (hashimoto’s) frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results before becoming increasingly hypothyroid
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum with Graves or Hashimoto’s
Dry skin suggests hypo
I found I was itchier when I started taking carbimazole, it did improve & taking regular antihistamine helped too. I still take antihistamine (for rhinitis) but if you are having a reaction to an ingredient in the medication it can help.
Was it just an antithyroid medication? (Carbimazole or PTU) or was anything else offered eg sometimes propranolol is temporarily prescribed.
What dose/s are you taking.
Have TSH, FT4 & FT3 been retested?
Hello Amanda and welcome to the forum :
There a few reasons why your thyroid has become overactive - have you been given a diagnosis yet or the reason why this has happened to you ?
Generally speaking when said to be ' over active ' an Anti Thyroid drug is prescribed - such as Carbimazole - and all these drugs do is semi-block your own new daily production of thyroid hormones while we wait for your over range T3 and T4 to fall back down into range with your symptoms relieved with your thyroid having reset itself.
Do you have any blood tests results and ranges detailing a TSH - Free T3 and Free T4 result and have you any antibody readings there as these will give us a clue as to the cause of this phase of ill health - these are generally written as TPO - TgAB - TRab - TSI - with numbers and ranges - or written out as a TSH Thyroid Receptor antibodies and a single number and :
Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for Carbimazole - there are known side effects - and there is an alternative - Propylthiouracil - PTU - for short :
I was advised to go directly to A & E if I developed a sore throat :
What symptoms took you to the doctor and have these been relieved by taking the AT drug - what dose of Carbimazole were you first put on and have you had any follow up blood test since and have you seen an endocrinologist and had confirmed the reason why your thyroid has become ' overactive ' ?
Do you have online access to your medical records - as most of the above details should be on there - if not - maybe ask at the doctors reception for the forms to complete as then you will be able to track your progress through this phase of ill health and we can support and explain anything to you that you don't understand.
