Hi. I've had hypothyroidism for 27 year's and was born with hypercalcemia familiar. In February I noticed my right gland area was enlarged and hoarse voice. I went for a blood test on April 1st to be told that I was slightly overactive and they would adjust medication at next routine blood appointment. However the swelling in my neck got bigger and I can feel and see a lump near my Adams apple area. My voice is still very hoarse or no voice at all. Bloods done again yesterday and referred to radiology and endocrinology. My question is can I develop Hashimotos now after being underactive for so long?
Hashimotos : Hi. I've had hypothyroidism for 2... - Thyroid UK
Hashimotos
Well, you could. But do you mean Hashi's - basically hypo with 'hyper' swings - or Graves' - hyperthyroidism?
Have you had any antibodies tested?
TRAB and TSI for Graves'
TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies for Hashi's.
Yes it will be Hashi's. Dr took test for antibodies awaiting results. Thanks for the information as I could only find when someone had Hashi's and went on to develop hypothyroidism but not the other way around.
Well, you don't 'develop' hyperthyroidism, you just have the occasional swing in that direction. But it's a false 'hyper', temporary. And it's not that the thyroid is producing too much hormone, it can't do that. It's just that the dying cells release their store of hormone into the blood causing the thyroid hormone levels to suddenly shoot up. Then, when the excess hormone has been used up/excreted, you become hypo again.
