Appetite and Hypothyroidism

Hi All,

I've had this, I suppose symptom for years but never thought to inquire about before but I assume it's connected to the body's ability to create energy in the cell, which is, after all, what T3 does and may explain why people with an underactive thyroid generally put on weight because they feel hungry.

If I don't get sufficient energy during the day, I feel decidedly unwell and I suspect it's got to do with the fact that I'm a bad converter of T4 to T3. I need 3 meals a day, if I miss the midday meal, by four or five in the afternoon I feel quite ill and I'm cold, shivering. Eating a decent size hot meal 'cures' me and in fact, I start to sweat for a short period.

Am I alone with this or do others here, have a similar experience?

Looking at previous posts and bio

Previous results showed low folate

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

You have Hashimoto’s

Are you on gluten free and/or dairy free diet

SlowDragon, I'm not answering these questions again, I've answered them before, they have nothing to do with my query.

Wow… rude.

It’s up to you whether you respond to SD’s questions but actually, they have everything to do with your query

As for your tone, it’s extremely rude and unnecessary

FYI, I feel a similar way when I’m overmedicated or my FT3 is too high

I don't miss meals often enough to say similar happens to me, but I can sometimes delay or forget to eat because I just don't get hungry like I used to. When that happens I can start to feel unwell and weak and then perk right up after a meal.

When I was left untreated I had constant food cravings as if my body was trying to get energy from somewhere that it was not getting from thyroid hormones.

Needing 3 meals a day and feeling better after food suggests it might be a blood sugar issue.

Your bio shows:

TSH:21.30 mIU/L (Range: 0.27 - 4.2)

Free T3: 2.6 pmol/L (Range: 3.1 - 6.8)

Free Thyroxine: 15.2 pmol/L (Range: 12-22)

and

CRP HS (Inflammation): 1.5mg/l (Range 0 - 5)

Have your a more up to date picture (you joined 2021 so I'm supposing the results were from then?)

When my FT3 is low as it was last year due to medication not working I had the need to eat.

Even when I was out in the car but not anymore. It gives the body something to hold onto, i.e fuel. It could be just that you need to raise your FT3.

Yes but unfortunately I'm a bad converter of FT4 to FT3 which is the cause of my energy problem. Taking FT3 directly is the best solution (or perhaps an NTD) except I can't get it prescribed. I could buy it privately but then there's the issue of dosage and my GP won't get involved (I've asked him).

A few options re T3-

-You can buy it yourself and follow instructions here/online to self treat.

-Thyroid uk has a list of nhs endos who prescribe t3. You can ask your gp for a referral- even out of your trust.

-Or you can get a private thyroid dr to dose it for you

I have no thyroid and take NDT Thyroid s which I source myself. This site provided me with the information on how to treat. You can purchaseT3 online and start taking a small amount to start with and build up. It's fast acting so start very slowly. It depends on how much you will require it's very reasonable and no need for the GP or Endos, perhaps just a private blood to start with to confirm your results.
