thyroid results

Hi

my sister is struggling with her physical health and mood. I have hashimoto and we have family history

I’ve got baby and thyroid brain and just wondered what you thought of her TSH results. Meant to be having t3 and t4 also tested

to me it looks like her thyroid results have been getting better which would maybe suggest she doesn’t have issue but guess possible t3 or t4 might be low

She thinks she’s perimenopause and generally been under a lot of pressure for years like lots of people

Thanks

Kate

Just testing TSH completely inadequate

Were all tests early morning, ideally before 9am and only drinking water between waking and test

For full Thyroid evaluation she needs need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Lower vitamin levels more common as we get older too

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

I’ve never heard about needing have goitre for it to be hashimoto
