hi I had symptoms such as breathlessness and excessive sweating about six months ago and so thyroid was tested came back abnormal. I went on carbimzole via a private dr while I wait for my nhs endo apt. I came out in a terrible rash all over so immediately stopped the med. now I’m just going to wait to see endo which I’ve been told could be April (earliest). In the meantime I’ve still been doing monthly bloods. Not sure what to make of them though. Obviously the results around January are due to the Carbimazole. Then the ones following that are without medication. Thanks

Was FT3 tested?

Have Graves antibodies been tested ? (TSI or TRAb)

When did you stop carbimazole? How long before this months test?

If your FT4 & FT3 levels do rise the alternative anti thyroid is Propylthiouracil (PTU).

TSH not reliable, will lag behind what levels & can be inaccurate for lots of reasons. Go by FT4 & FT3.

Do you test as recommended?

Get GP to test thyroid antibodies

Trab or TSI antibodies for Graves’ disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism)

TPO and TG antibodies for autoimmune hypothyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s. Can also be mildly raised with Graves’ disease

Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms before becoming increasingly hypothyroid

Also ESSENTIAL to test iron and ferritin if breathless

Breathlessness is often linked to low iron

Excessive sweating can be thyroid, but can also be low B12

Request GP test B12, folate and vitamin D too

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing
